TMP rebuild kits
TMP rebuild kits
I'm going to have new tires put on my Fit this coming weekend.
The dealer wants to place rebuild kits on the TPM sensors.
My Fit is 26 months old and has just over 28,000 miles on it.
Should the TPM senors need messing with?
I assume the "kit" is just a o-ring and a new valve core.
Also, are there batteries in the TPM sensors?
If so, how often do the batteries need to be replaced?

It is not necessary to remove the TPMS sensors from the rim when changing tires, but, if you are putting new tires on it anyway, replacing the parts that come in a rebuild kit is cheap insurance against leaks. I got a box of 50 TPMS sensor rebuild kits at Autozone for $10. The kit consists of a new core, valve stem cap, rubber O-ring, and crush washer. The last two are not reusable and must be replaced any time the sensor is removed from the rim.
The batteries in our TPMS sensors are not removable for service. When they go bad (I'm hearing something like 7-10 years) you must replace the sensor and have the system reset.

Thanks for the reply!
I did not think they had to be removed to replace the tires.
I fully belive in "if it ain't broke, don't mess with it".
The cheapest "kits" I found were Dill, at $2.25 each.

Hey, no problem! You may not be able to get the kits at Autozone any more. I couldn't find them when I went back to the website. $2.25 each still isn't a bad price compared to what some places charge. Like I said, it's cheap insurance. Thinking about it, every time I've had tires changed and conventional stems, they've replaced the stems... (probably because it's easier to rip the stem out to get the air out of the tire)
When I got new rims, I also got new (to the car, anyway) sensors because I wanted to mount snow tire on my old steel wheels. I asked about the service kit at several tire shops and they acted like they didn't know what I was talking about, or the parts were not available. Too bad, because I would have had them mount my snow tires when I got them.

The question here is not 'Do I need to replace the sensors?' but 'Do I need the sensor service kit?'. Replacing the sensors would, indeed, be pointless unless they had ceased functioning or were damaged by the shop. Replacing the parts in the service kit (core, rubber seal, crush washer) is cheap insurance against leaks.
Or, you can get used sensors from a reputable seller on eBay for $10-15 each.

Yes you're right....afterall it is cheap to get new seals and washers. good point.
Its cheap insurance, but, if you're not removing the sensors from the rim I wouldn't bother. Its kind of a waste of money. Some shops advise to do it because they are purely a profit item, they pay about a quarter per kit, then sell them at $2+ per wheel.
