does the factory window have a little tint on them? the reason i ask is because the law in NY is 35% and if i get that and then if the factory installed windows already have a small percentage - im afraid it will go over and warrant an fix it ticket from the police. =\

From what I've read, even if it has no tint, and you add the 35% tint, you may still be stopped by a cop. Apparently, the shops install tint that still may not meet the requirement based on the cops tint meter.

 

Meanwhile, other tint shops stock film that's a few percent lighter than what they advertise, in order to have an end result that matches what the consumer asks for.

Just find a reputable shop and ask them. If they don't seem to know (or care), move on the next one.

 

Damione hit it right on the nose with that one word, reputable. A reputable shop, and not one of the "$99 any car" places will get it right and keep you out of trouble with the cops (at least with the window tint, anyway).

I am happy with my LLUMAR film. It is warranted through their national network of dealers and, in my case, is the darkest allowed by state law. Your local LLUMAR dealer will make sure you're legal and put a sticker on the door jamb that also shows its compliance with state law should you have any run-ins with the po po.

Ask who tints the windows for the dealership closest to you. That will be a reputable shop, it doesn't matter what dealer it is. then go there. They won't try to upsell you because they don't need to.
