Silly n00b Paranoia-Based Question

Hey there, how y'all doin'? I'm writing because I've had my 2008 Fit Sport with 38,000 miles on it for a few weeks now, and I'm still getting used to it, but something seemed different starting yesterday. When I would slow down to a stop, the car would thud, like a big bass cannon going off, in the front area, or so it felt. It felt kind of weird, and the last time I recall feeling something like that is when the engine mount on a previous car broke, so the engine actually moved around.

I asked a friend to look at the engine while I revved it in park, and it moved a little bit, but not that much.

So lemme ask y'all. Is the engine supposed to move at all when being revved, and am I being paranoid, or is there a larger problem here?

Thanks!

that sounds like a problem. haha is your car stick or auto? I don't know if that will necessary make a difference, but my car definitely does not thud or move at a stop.

If you have an auto, put it in S and drive between 10-20 MPH on a empty straight road. Once at a speed in that range, pull the up-shift paddle and make sure the gear indicator says, "M3"; this assures you that the trans is in 3rd gear. Now keep an eye on the gear indicator and let the car coast to a stop. Whenever the car's speed falls below 6 MPH the auto trans will skip 2nd and shift directly into 1st gear.

If the problem doesn't appear again when doing this or if you have a manual, then take it to a dealer and get it sorted. You should still have the 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty.

I have an automatic, but I'll try that method you suggested, Hootie, thanks!

No problem. Also, I forgot to add that if this is the problem that you were talking of, you can prevent/reduce it by downshifting into 2nd gear around 10-20 MPH prior to stopping. Hope this helps.

Hey, I followed your directions, Hootie, and the problems hasn't happened again. I actually hasn't happened in a couple of days, which is weird. It occurred after I filled up the tank, but hasn't happened in the days after, including today. Hopefully it's nothing. There is, however, this odd whining sound coming from the engine, so it could be a belt in that case. I'm probably gonna take her in this weekend to the dealer. Sigh.

Well the gas tank is located right under the driver and passenger seat. Soo if its coming from thee it could be. My gas tank can be noisy sometimes.

Interesting. The tank is half full now and isn't making the noise. Is it possible it was just being noise because I'd just filled it?

Sorry for all the hopefully-not-stupid questions, I just really love this car and wanna take care of it, you know?

Cool, its good to know that downshifting into 2nd helped. This is a common trait in automatic Fits both GD and GE. In the GD for example, its quite a noticeable difference in the gears since 1st gear ends around 30 MPH and 3rd gear ends at 93 MPH.

As for the odd whine, what does it sound like and does it happen at a certain RPM? I know my A/T GD makes a strange sound when I shift in the higher RPMs (4500 to redline). It sounds like a goofy grunt and cracks me up every time I hear it.

LOL Thats one thing I forgot to consider. Its really easy make the gas slosh too; just sit in the, rock side to side for a bit, then stop and listen.

The odd whine sounds like it might be a belt or some such, I'm unsure. It's not major, but I can hear it, so it does worry me. It's like a high-pitched sound that oscillates every second or two.

Oh ok, well that should fall under the 5 year/ 60,000 mile powertrain warranty if I recall correctly. Not 100% sure though, need to sleep and check the manual.

K, so I filled up the car again this morning, and the thud is back, so it must be because the gas tank is full. Is that normal?

oh the sound u might be hearing, is because the gas tank is right underneath ur seat, when ur gas tank is full you'll definitely hear the water slosh around.

that might be it. I wasn't used to it first but i am now lol.

Oh, okay, I feel it too though, when I slow to a stop, I feel it thud, so I guess that's normal too? I totally hear it. I am new to the car so maybe I just have to get used to it.
