Spray paint for calipers and drums

Posted it in the what did you do to... tread but it got lost in other posts.

About high-temp resistant spray paint for calipers and drums, a friend of mine told me that they don't last long...how long did it last for you guys? 2 years? 3?

I live in Québec where winter last 5 months and roads are full of calcium...

Given you're in Quebec I honestly wouldn't even bother, as sadly given what you guys use for "preventative road salt" absolutely rusts anything and everything out. lol

None the less, painting your calipers and the length of it lasting all comes down to proper preparation. I did mine earlier within the year, and they're holding up fantastically.

Well the salt doesn't rust everything, i've seen this spring a 2004 Civic in Québec city and the only owner told me(almost proudly) that he never did a single anti-rust oil spray! But the car had almost no rust! Of course it's not a Mazda... :P

But since it's almost august, i'm thinking of waiting 'till next spring to do the job...

I am between the better hockey provinces of you two.

I have had mine done for two years using the Duplicolour kit. If you do a good job of prepping they will last. I find my drums are fine but the Calipers could use some touchup.

i painted the calipers on my old maxima with high-temp spray paint a long time ago and it lasted for the five years i had the car afterward. chicago gets plenty of salt as well. i don't think road salt really affects the paint. it seems to flake off after repeated heat cycles. as someone else already said, prep is the key. make sure to very thoroughly clean the calipers and drums with a wire brush and maybe even solvent as well, let dry, and then apply. make sure to do several thin coats. when i did mine i think i did at least three or four coats. let dry completely before driving.

that said, however, the paint is cheap and it doesn't take long to apply if you're not taking the calipers off, so if you have to reapply every few years, not really a big deal.

I had my front brake calipers zinc plated to prevent oxidation and rust. Plus they look pretty cool.
