summer tire for 2008 base?

We live in Canada where there is lots of snow in the winter, & we have good winter tires.

We need to replace the summer tires. Currently it has all-season ones on it, but I would prefer true summer ones for improved performance.

However, the tire size 175/65R14 has so few options. The only ones I can find are the Bridgestone Ecopia EP100. Is there somewhere else I could be looking? What are the issues if we move to a 15" tire?

You'll have to get 15" wheels

185/60/14 should have some good options as far as summer tires go, or at least decent all seasons. I know you can get Dunlop Star Specs in that size, which are a great summer tire.

Not trying to sound condesending, but do you really need "performance" tires? Are you going to be racing auto-x or HPDE? Or just spirited drives?

Unfortunately, not too many "performance" oriented tires come in 14" sizes. I'd say jump up to at least 15". You can get stock Fit Sport rims (15 or 16) for pretty cheap. If not, you can get some cheap Rota wheels. There are some good selections in 205/50/15 tires. My favorite (all-around summer) tire used to be Bridgestone RE750's, but they stopped making them in 15's. They do have the RE11's, but they're pretty aggressive tires that are more fit for auto-x, in my opinion. My last set was Yokohama S-Drives, which were great. Decent prices, too. I'd look into those.

Absolutely correct 185/60x14 will be as good a summer tire as you can possibly want un ledss you area/xing going for the gold and even then the star direzzas may be the best there. here where wear ratings hasve to exceed 150 the stars rule and these guys are call expecting those tires to last till next year even. But be forewarned: they ain't great in snow or cold.

I had 205/50/15 Michelin pilot sport tires on my car for over 40,000 miles and they were amazing. No tire i've ever had in the past compares. Still, it was probably a bit overkill for my morning commute

Azenis RT615K and Star Specs are both available in 185/60 or 195/60 (I can't remember which has which size(s)). You don't need anything better than that.

Consult Tirerack for times in wet and dry (never mind their opinions), Consumer Reports, and R&T for tire tests in the last 30 days. Numbers are always better when choosing tires.
