P0133 - Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Slow Response Bank 1 Sensor 1
Hello,
My 2007 Fit Sport just threw its first pending code. P0133 slow 02 sensor response bank 1. Anyone ever get this? The engine was cold and I revved it past 5k overtaking a cab (not smart) and it threw the code about 5-10 minutes later while cruising at 35mph.
I'm thinking I'll just clear it and hope it doesn't come back. I've heard it could be a faulty sensor or an exhaust leak. How can I check for exhaust leaks?
Thanks for any advice!

Given your gas mileage issues, I'd replace the O2 sensor (or plan to, when it warms up this Spring). These symptoms seem related to me.

To check exhaust leaks, just crawl under the car when engine is running and listen. (putt-putt-putt)
Or, look for telltale black streaks at the joints and seams of the exhaust pipes.

Sounds great! Thanks for the advice! Is it a tough job? I've heard OEM O2 sensors are expensive. Can someone recommend a reputable brand that makes a suitable replacement part?
Also, I really like my Ultragauge but it keeps ringing that I have a pending code. I tried the clear check engine light function but that didn't work, since it doesn't seem to clear pending codes. Do I have to unplug my battery for 5 mins to clear the pending code?

Have not changed an O2 on a Fit, but an Oxygen Sensor Wrench is recommended. ~$6 from Harbor Freight. Make sure you get the correct size.
3/8" Offset Oxygen Sensor Wrench
Also a can of penetrating oil like Kroil or PB Blaster is a good pre-treatment.

Some codes cannot be easily cleared especially if they are still active. Last summer I forgot to plug in a sensor after cleaning my throttle body and could not get rid of the code for several drive cycles, about a week of daily driving.

Rock auto does ship to Canada but harbour freight most definitely doesn't. It's too bad because harbour freight has some great prices on low profile jacks!
I've heard there's such a thing as a "hard code" which means the failure is permanent and the code will reappear instantly if you try to clear it. Perhaps this is what this is.
Thanks so much for your help! +rep

Where is this sensor located? Is it by the catalytic converter or in the engine bay by the exhaust manifold?
A few weeks ago I accidentally backed into a huge block of packed snow and ice. I was trying to turn around in a narrow alleyway and most all the parking spaces were cleared except for this two three foot high mound of ice that I didn't see in reverse. When I looked at my car, it made the bumper cover pop out of its clips on the side (popped it right back in) and it left my HFP muffler packed with snow. I took a stick and cleared the worst of it out so I don't go around driving with a blocked muffler but i wonder if that shock might have loosened or even damaged a joint in my exhaust line.
Is it possible I might have an exhaust leak? I find the note of my muffler is rather low; could just be the HFP side but it could also be a slight leak. I'm tempted to get under my car and check the down pipe and around the cat converter. Any suggestions on how best to do this? I've heard some people use seafoam but I'm not confident putting a product like that in my engine, not at all because the product is bad but because I don't have much expertise and don't want to wreck my engine by using the treatment incorrectly.

So now it's a question of do I replace the sensor... Is possibly a dirty sensor? Could I try and clean it? Maybe with some throttle body cleaner?
SOMEBODY must have violated the BRO CODE and actually read the UltraGauge owners manual!

If you DO decide to replace the O2 sensor, it is located on the exhaust manifold just ahead of the "cat". (#5 in the pic.) As I said I am not familiar with the Fit's access to this part, but I HAVE removed the shield (#4) from above so I bet it would not be too bad.

The O2 wrenches are a common tool, I expect any local autoparts store would sell them. (HF just has convenient pictures...)
my local canadian tire has an NGK o2 sensor. Could this do the trick? It's considerably cheaper at 110$ with no shipping or brokerage to worry about. NGK is the make of the OEM spark iridium plugs is it not?

The NGK sensor (a.k.a., NTK for aftermarket) would be a part I'm willing to take a chance on.
Rock Auto sells this for the Fit @ $94.97 USD

Actually, I attempted to clear some codes myself with the engine running, nothing happened. Tried once more to be sure... nadda.
Shut off engine (key in ACC mode), went to clear the code and the UG shut off before I got a chance... duh.
I'm sure you could figure out what happened next.
So I ordered a replacement Denso sensor from rockauto for 170$ and bought my service manual from ebay to help with this and other future repairs. To pick up my service manual, I merrily have to drive about one hour to the border and back and guess what, I'm getting a steady 38-39 MPG average! Not just instant MPG but trip average. And this is on cruise control going 80mph.
So now I've got my new sensor and my shiny new manual but I'm unsure whether to change the sensor or not. I don't get it, how is it I just got the best MPG since I started tracking and I usually always get a steady 20 in the city? I know driving style yada yada but it seems whether I drive pedal to the metal or granny style I always get 20 on the nose (average on the tank). I know my calipers are ok because I frequently touch my front mags to check to see if I have a sticky caliper and my mags are always cold/normal. However, my Fit still feels more sluggish than when I first bought it in 2012 with 76k kilometres on the odo. Now I'm at about 86k and I feel like I have to press the accelerator harder to move and sometimes it seems my engine bogs down when accelerating from a stop, even with considerable gas pedal input and with the tranny in 1st. Could it be coils, or a valve adjust?
When I came back and I was at canadian customs, I turned off the ignition to speak with the canadian customs officer. When I was told to proceed, I cranked the engine which started up and instantly stalled (in neutral). Turned the ignition again and it was ok. Since I cleared the pending sensor slow response code a month ago, no code has come up since.
What gives? How come my car is acting funny? How is it I get 40 highway and 20 city? Should I change the sensor? I'm thinking about selling the replacement sensor if my current one is good.
One last thing. There is a ring in the top right hand corner of the Ultragauge. I read in the manual that it tells you whether the car is operating in a closed or open loop. Mine frequently changes from closed loop operation to open when I'm driving around town. Is this normal? It says in the UG manual that it can be an indicator of a problem with the car. Is it that pesky sensor acting up?

Again, same numbers that i get. On the highway i get 40 ish. In the city I get 16 to 20.
A clue for you maybe.
When I first got the car last summer I got 25 ish in the city with aggressive driving. The alternator was just replaced by owner and the battery was weak so i decided to replace with the Costco big battery and I put in premium gas to see how the gas miles wouldd change. Didn't go up as i hoped. Went down instead.
I did not do idle procedure at the time. It never got better when I went back to regular gas.
After a couple months of driving I did the idle procedure for fun and got mpg a little better. Average 20 ish now city,40 ish hwy.
Battery upgrade ?-- reset computer?
anyone else up size without a drop in mpg?
gas upgrade---fool computer ?
Do more hwy driving to set the computer ?
No codes ever, only two things I have done to the car.
Valves are next...the are noisy.

Could be just resetting itself after the battery install.Gas wise i mean.
After getting 40 on the hwy I just got 30 in the city so maybe you need more hwy driving to set er up.
For your O2 sensor I would try to light er up again doing the same as you did before {where that cab}.lol. Possible just a fluke but if you can sell the new sensor then do.You can test O2 with a meter but not sure how.
