Weird "whistling" sound only while in gear and after car warms up
Hi all,
I have a 2007 Sport Edition Fit with an automatic transmission and about 115,000 miles on it that started making a weird whistling sound a couple weeks ago. I didn't pay much attention to it because I thought it might be caused by the weather getting cold (we had some fairly low temps here in Central Oregon a few weeks back), but the noise has persisted and seems like it has worsened over time.
The whistle only happens when I'm in drive or reverse, and only happens after the car has been warmed up for about 15-20 minutes. I never hear it when I do a cold start in the morning or when I'm in park or neutral. It's especially noticeable when I come to a stop after coasting and hold the brake while waiting for a light to change, etc,.
I don't believe it's the belt as the belt was changed recently and looks good, and the noise sounds like it's coming from the right center of the car, closer to the battery, not on the passenger side of the engine compartment. It also doesn't sound like a rubber "squeal", but more an air whistling noise.
Any ideas on what it might be? Could this simply be a vacuum leak somewhere? Bad air filter? Transmission problem?

Have you tried locating it by popping the hood and listening with the engine running and the car in gear (and, of course, stopped—the hand brake should do the trick, or a friend in the car)?
Any of the things you listed seem like possibilities. It might also be something on the radiator or near the radiator fan, though that would seem to be unrelated to being in or out of gear. A leak or hole in the air intake system could conceivably also be the culprit, I suppose, particularly if the engine mounts are loose or worn and the engine is rocking when you shift into gear.

It's interesting that you mention the engine rocking, as I definitely noticed the engine "shift" when moving between neutral and drive. I'll have to do another visual inspection during the daytime to see if I can see any loose/broken hoses.
Thanks!
