Will Not shift to Reverse

GD3 MT. i was driving pretty hard then when i finally got home, i tried to shift to R on my 5sp MT and it was just slowly going forward, so i shifted to different gears and then to neutral and still will not reverse. I had to push the car back to the carpark. Good thing i was home already. so i have not driven the car since then. Anybody have any inputs? or what made it happen. This is the FIRST time it ever did that.

Try this.

But for real, you might have a busted idler gear or a busted gear selector.

If the shifter moves into reverse properly but the car doesn't back up, then that sounds like some internal problem with the transmission—a bent fork or broken reverse gear or similar. There is a slight chance that it's some sort of misalignment or other problem between the shifter and the transmission, but I would generally expect that to affect other gears as well.

do you have a skunk 2 short shifter? I found the little extension piece gets loose and messes up shifting into 2-4-R gears.

Have you tried double clutching? I once couldn't shift into first or second, my shifter just wouldn't even budge to the left. I tried everything and nothing worked. So sitting in my car I searched the web and tried it: depress the clutch all the way in and out twice and then try shifting.

My shifter does that on occasion where the lever goes back there but the gear doesn't engage. I have to just try again and it works. Good luck.

i tried to fix it today by repeatedly putting it in R with different clutch levels, then i realized even when its in any of the gear there is alot of side to side play. I mean usually when i put it in gear its firm and has very little wiggle, but when i shifted in different gears whether the car was on or off, there was still that play. i can feel it shift in gear and it moves forward but seems very lose in each position as if it was in neutral, but in gear. You guys know what i mean?
Help what do i do? i want to try to do it myself

Sounds like something is loose in the linkage between the stick and the transmission. I'd start by taking a look at the shifter mechanism under the center console. I think the Fit uses a cable linkage between the shifter and the transmission, so the end of the cable sheathe coming loose or something along those lines could cause what you're observing.

A certain minor degree of looseness is not unexpected as things age and wear and stretch, but it shouldn't generally be excessive on a car like the Fit with a pretty straightforward shift linkage.
