Catalytic Converter

How many miles y'all getting on your cats? I'm getting a P0420 code after 135K miles.

What brand of oil do you use?
Any mods? Exhaust manifold donut leaks?
Typically this code is set if secondary O2 detects fluctuating O2 levels in exhaust (it should read steady as opposite to the upstream A/F sensor)

Great questions, doc. Mobil1 since day one changed every 2-3K miles. PRM Jet Stream intake sealed to fenderwell for CAI, filter cleaned each season. Megan dual outlet muffler. Every 65K miles have adjusted valves, changed out Denso Iridium plugs and Denso 02 sensors. No exhaust leaks. Last week the same light went off in my obsessively tuned ’99 Dakota 5.2, and I figured it was due for new Denso sensors anyway so I replaced them. Light came back on and then next fill-up mysteriously went off before I bought a new Magnaflow cat. By the way, Magnaflow makes a cat for the Fit. Last night after 5 days of procrastinating the light went out in the Fit all by itself. Since I had my ’87 Carrera in 2007 I’ve used nothing but Chevron Supreme 90 Octane in anything I have with a piston, since the Porsche gurus all endorse it as the best gas. I always buy it from the same guy because I trust him. Upshot: Todd got a bad batch of gas. I guess for one tank in almost 10 years I’ll cut him that much slack. Great lesson for me. Next time I get a light and it’s the same code I’ll wait a week before I do anything. Thanks for being the only responder...

Are you suppose to use oil on air cleaner element (like K&N CAI)?
if this is irrelevant, I would recommend get OBDII reader that monitors live data and obtain reading of secondary O2 sensor (graph will be ideal) and Cat converter temperature. In any rate the secondary sensor output should be flat line on cruising. Once I see the date I will monitor one on my car and hopefully will be able to compare reading and make meaningful conclusion.
PS It looks like 70% of this forum users are the college kids with supeficial car knowledge so they are only asking and not answering

Ouch, I'm not one of them.. I just happen to have kids and a life and don't look at fitfreak every day... A lot of the questions can be answered by searching this forum or google...
