That gas smell in the cabin

I've been reading different posts about why this can occur. For my fit, it's generally at startup and then coming to a stop when travelling. With this last tank of gas, I bought 89 octane rather than 87. I haven't had the startup smell so far. The smell does show up at a stop after travelling for a while, but it's much more faint and less exhaust smelling.

So, injectors? plugs not burning all the fuel off? Do I understand the coils can run half-assed and aren't just a 'it works or it's dead' type of item.

I like this car, and I just took a promotion that's have me driving over three counties all week. I had the recalls taken care of last weekend, and my sales guy magically appeared with a reasonable offer for my fit to get in to a CPO Civic that I can afford. Should I have taken it? I've yet to get a Honda to 300K, and I don't think this is the one that'll make it. Thoughts?
