Drive axle installation
Drive axle installation
I have a 2008 Honda Fit with 110,000 miles. I recently had my drive axle replaced on drivers side. After installation I noticed a "popping" sound on drivers side front end when making sharp turns and shifting the car from park to drive. I took the car back to mechanic and they said the "popping" sound was not very loud (they did hear it) and they were not sure of cause. They said keep an eye on it and bring back in if it gets worse. I did not hear this "popping" sound before the drive axle replacement. Does anyone have any thoughts on this issue? Thank you
Per procedure they should be separating lower ball joint, so this part should be checked out.
Also if they used inexpensive re-build axle the axle itself can be a source of noise (in most cases rebuilt axle means new boots are put in; joints are not replaced unless really necessary)
Finally, the mechanic may drive an axle into the transmission by hammering inner joint with the axle itself this can damage inner joint

Thank you for the information. Do you think I am in danger of causing additional damage if I wait to see if the sound described gets louder? At this point my mechanic did not think it was serious but said to keep an eye on it. I'm concerned if I bring it back in and they start "replacing parts" without a definitive idea of the exact cause I may be spend a fair amount of money while they "replace parts". If I am in danger of causing additional damage I would bring it back to the mechanic ASAP. Thanks again for your thoughts.
