P0301-0300-0302-0303

I encountered a P0302 trouble code about two months ago. I replace the ignition coil on cylinder two and all was well for two months. The other day I received a P0301 trouble code. I assumed it is the ignition coil again. So I order a new ignition coil and while it’s getting shipped to me I start receiving P0300 codes along with the P0301 code and a P0303 code.

So, I ordered two more ignition coil‘s so that all four will be new. I installed the first one that arrived just now and I’m still getting a P0300 code, a P0301 code, the P0303 code and also a P0302 code!

Considering it’s not the ignition coils, where do I start troubleshooting next?

Using Denso or Hitachi coils? Others are often bad right out of the box.
Plugs have more than 60,000 miles or aren't NGK or Denso iridiums?
When was last valve adjustment done? Mine are out of spec at every 50k mile check.

Using Hitachi coils and NGK plugs.

A few have recommended a valve adjustment as well, but no, have never had it done.

As for the other trouble codes...

I forgot to clear the codes after installing the coil on cylinder #1

I'm assuming that whatever wasn't firing was causing the crank to spin so "out of time" that it tripped the other sensors.

Cleared the codes and now it's running well with no codes being thrown back.

I'll be replacing the coils on cylinders 3 & 4 tonight so all 4 will be new.

Good to hear! You'll probably be good with all new coils, but I would plan on a valve adjustment if you plan on maximizing engine life.

Mine have never sounded out of spec and dealers will just tell you they are fine, but every person on this board that has checked have found their's out of spec. It's an old school mechanical valvetrain that does not self adjust. Adjustment is pretty much mandatory for long term use.

At 62K on my car the clearances were between 8 and 10 mils for exhaust valves and 8 mils for most intakes.

Do you mean they were at .008 and .010 inch?

Spec is:
Intake - .15-.19mm (.006-.007 in)
Exhaust - .25-.30mm (.010-.012 in)

Mine have never been horribly off, but I do them every 50k because it's easy and almost free. Only requires a dab of gray rtv and a bit of garage time.

Only expense for me is that I change the plugs at the same time (~$25). I time it to coincide with an oil change so that part is a wash.
