Turning the backseat area into a storage area
Turning the backseat area into a storage area
Hello all,
I haven't been able to find anything out regarding this, but someone must have done this by now right?
It looks like it would be pretty easy to do and offer quite a bit of storage if the backseats were taken out. I'm thinking there's about two large suitcases worth of space there. I'd like to build a platform that extends the back area all the way to the front seats. This platform could have two hatches that open and close.
The most trouble I see with my plans is dealing with the electronics of the two seats. I'd like to have it where I can remove the seats, but also put them back in when needed.
Any help with this would be very much appreciated.

I'm not too up on what will happen, but I'm thinking there's some idiot lights that will come on if the sensors for the rear seats are disconnected............no? Isn't there some airbags for the back too?
Yep I think those seats are 100% manual.
That said I think the reason most people don't remove them is that they already make a flat load floor when folded down. Yes you are obviously taking up space with the seats that you would get back if you stripped them, but generally not enough to want to try and recreate a flat floor with DIY setup.
Removal should be easy enough though. Might be a little heavy but not impossible.

There was an older thread where someone did remove the back seats, and the debate about whether it was really worth it ensued.
If someone wants to do it?
But I'd fold the seats down, and take a look, and at least give some thought if the project is really worth it to you. Yes, because the seats do fold nearly flat, you aren't really creating a whole lot more space.
IMO...the beauty of "magic seats" is the ability to configure. I'd think you'd have two suit cases worth of space, if you wanted it, just by folding the seats either flat or up..in tall mode.

I did some searching before posting this thread and just now. I have yet to find a good thread on removing the rear seats. BTW, I did find 4 threads with "removing the rear seats". Any help?
Well, as long as it's safe, I think people can modify their vehicles any way they wish. If you want to remove the rear seats...good luck. Take some pics, of how it turns out.
I am just personally talking about my own opinion, and that is that the Fit's seats and design is integrated and designed to create space, that I kind of feel the value of removing the seats pretty limited. I would be curious as to how much actual additional space it creates. Functionally, I can't think it's much.
Plus purely for myself? I wouldn't want to deal with what to do with the rear seats once removed. .That's a storage challenge.
Maybe I'm underestimating the space it would create?
And bottom line...if you want to do it...go for it. It will reduce some minimal amount of weight.
I do remember a thread, can't remember the title, where someone DID remove the rear seats. There was a bit of a debate created as to how useful it really was.

I realize I'm not really creating extra space. Just using it where it would better suit me. I realize there's ways to create more space that is more useful. What I'm shooting for is something that can be easily transferred from one configuration to another. Also would be using the space wiser.
I'll post up some pics when finish.
Thanks for the help and much appreciated.

What you need sir is a motorcycle :P
Thanks for the suggestion, but I've been married to two wheels ever since I was 10 yrs old. Sometimes powered, mostly self-powered. I still have a love for two wheels. Hopefully I'll never say goodbye to the self-powered ones.
Reinstalling the seats is just as easy, I can do it in <1 minute per side.
Reasons for me:
1. I can store longer skis by sliding them under the front seat
2. I need the space when my camping platform is in
3. Save weight
