High mileage questions

I am looking to sell my 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The fuel economy is horrendous. There are two used Honda Fit's in my area for sale. A 2010 Sport CVT w/169000 miles And a 2009 Sport CVT Navigation w/175000 mile.

Is there any recommendation between the two different years and features?

And is there anything that I should look for with the higher miles?

Thank you.

Eric

170,000 miles s beyond useful life of most cars. There are people here with ultra-high mileage Hondas, but those are typically well-maintained from the start.

If you live in climate with no-salt, and find a very-well maintained Honda (with all maintenance records) from the original owner (not dealer), then maybe that is worth considering. But I wouldn't.

If there is any deferred maintenance, expect the repair bills to be very high. Also expect some regular wear items to require some work tires, brakes, springs, shocks, etc (which are expensive also, but less expensive).

Regardless, you need to have a mechanic that knows Hondas put this on a lift and do a full inspection.

I’m at 178k on my 2010. I’ve had it since around 25k, live in New England. I honestly don’t take very good care of it, flog it almost daily. I’ve replaced the clutch once not too long ago and the brakes a couple times, that’s about it. It’s got a few little rust spots but nothing major. I JUST changed the plugs for the first time and they looked like they could have gone a lot longer. This car is the most durable I’ve ever driven. 170k miles is not end of life for these cars. It’s barely middle age.

Thanks for all the reply's. I have a very short commute to work. Or in the summer I'm traveling once a month to open water swims on the East coast. The Fit seems to be the right car. I'm not afraid to work on my own cars. So that's why I was inquiring about any high mileage maintenance issues.

Thank you all again.

It’s sometimes easy sometimes not so easy, depends what you’re doing 😂 I had a hell of a time fitting on a new drive belt. It’s a pretty tight reach down there. Other stuff is easy though.

I was doing a 180 mile round trip commute for a few years in it. The car took it like a champ

i also drove it to DC/MD from the Boston area. It’s a great long hauler too. You can get 40mpg if you work it on the highway

Just for the record I purchased a beat Honda fit, with 230k. I have been able to repair it and it's almost like new, runs great and everything works. It's amazing how cheap these cars are to repair, as long as you know how to work one your own cars. And have basic tools.

I bought my 2009 fit sport with 148,000, it was well maintained, but was used commercially. I replaced the tie rods, ac compressor, just did plugs at 250k. Only other was routine maintenance. Getting rust on the hood and wheel well right rear. I don't baby the car, it's been remarkable.

Good to know. Thank you.

Still trying to sell my Trailblazer. There are a few higher mileage Fit's in my town for sale. They are automatic transmission. I would prefer the 5 speed..

When I bought it, I worked for Honda, I asked the 3 best mechanics, they all said the fit engine was the most reliable Honda makes. The Sport is better looking and has pattle shifters which are fun, but I seldom use. I cann't speak for other years, this is terrific.

Great information! Thank you for passing along.

I am active in marathon swimming, which despite relatively inexpensive on the equipment side, has become expensive on the entry fee side, I looking for the Fit's reliability and fuel economy to get me from Pennsylvania to New England or as far as the Mississippi River.
