Angry Hatch window busted

Hi everyone,

Looks like my back window smashed, not quite sure how (theft attempt or something else, maybe):

I say 'something else' where I'm thinking it might have been the spoiler pressing down on the window, where there was a bit of crusty snow on the roof. There are no signs of an object hitting it, from what I can see...

Anyone else ever have this happen and any ideas on price? Luckily I have some tint to hold it together in the meantime...

Safelite wants 259 to replace the window. That's not too bad all things considered. I doubt the spoiler having snow on it was the cause, it mounts to the top of the hatch area through a few metal fasteners and isn't touching the glass.

Assuming OP is in Newfoundland, Canada, it might be a little more, on top of it being in CAD.

All I can think of is its windy and a rock nicked it just right. You wouldn't see the impacted spot because there are chunks missing especially that lower left and right hand corners. Or its been brutally cold. Or both. I dunno. Maybe someone did try to break in. No one will know. I doubt the spoiler would've caused this.

The only times I've seen this happen aside from vandalism was slamming the hatch and turning on the defrost in really cold weather.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, it could have been any one of those things; at least it wasn't a hit and run. Hopefully it's not the rear defroster, with winter coming on and all . Great pic btw, julianachos (Gros Morne)...

I'll report back on the cost, I'll be into the 400 buck range i'm sure, when it's all said and done, yikes!

Just curious why you don't turn it over to your car insurance company and see if it's covered under your policy?

Oh, Sorry! I did, actually!

They'll cover it under my comprehensive for 250 (CAD), no apparent policy cost increase either. It will be good to have that fixed, with winter settling in.
