Another battery alternative for 2nd Gen Fit: Group 55
Hello Fit owners! Here's another battery alternative for the 2009-2013 Fit (and other years, of course)
The stock Yuasa on my 2013 Fit started giving me trouble last year and started acting up again - time to kiss it goodbye.
I just upgraded my stock 151R Yuasa battery to a Group 55.
For contrast:
Yuasa 151R: 400 CA, 340 CCA L: 7-1/4" W: 5" H: 8-3/4"
Typical Group 55 Specs: 665 CA, 540 CCA L: 8-3/4" W: 6" H: 8-1/2"
So far - I have seen installations of 51R, 121R and 26R with mixed success on the forms and Youtube. Sometimes awkward diagonal positioning, very tight squeezes, slicing and dicing shit with a rotary - So gr 55 seemed like a good option give the approx 1 inch difference in width and length. The goal was to be minimally invasive.
The Gr 55 I eventually bought from Batteries Expert stated: CA 710 CCA 570
Canadian Tire has group 55s in stock in quite a few locations - but they were being little shits because it wasn't the stock battery for the Fit.
They served me up a turd stew of "blahblahblah, we have to associate this battery to a car - otherwise it won't be under warranty and you'll mess up the stock in our computers"
along with other bullshit i.e. "The amps are more on this than your stock battery - it could damage something" (clueless staff). Do you want to make a sale or not?
I would have invented a fictitious car... but it was a hassle, it's honestly hard to find a car which matched GR 55 in their database... They couldn't even find half the cars that supposedly use(d) it.
Huge battery fitment catalogue here(I don't see any cars with Group 55 options. Japan does not seem to have an equivalent size). You can buy the latest book for $3 but this is free. https://www.batterysales.com/downloa...-1994-2013.pdf
Some US vendors will show what batteries fit what vehicles. For example go to www.oreillyauto.com
Search this battery: Super Start Premium Group Size 55 Top Post Battery Part # 62PRM Line: SSB
At the bottom click on "compatability" where it shows dozens of old cars from AMC, Jeep, Ford, Kia that are indicated
Nice find. What was the price difference between this and a 151? I think that’s one of the draws to the 51 (at least here in the states) is price... it’s typically about half what the 151 costs due to its ubiquity.

The BatterySales catalogue is a great resource!
For the wires, the negative terminal required no adjustments whatsoever.
The positive will depend on the year of the Fit. The Group 55 battery has a small lip/raised edge near the terminals (see photo below). My 2013 Fit has the weird battery fuse assembly tacked on the positive battery cable terminal. I used a round file to file away a little plastic to make it fit extra snug to that lip. All other Fits don't appear to have this weird battery fuse assembly in the way on the positive terminal cable, should FIT without any modifications.
I saw the list of cars - I initially tried claiming I had a fictitious 1994 Kia Sephia to get the battery from Canadian Tire... they couldn't match it in their system and were giving me an awfully hard time. On their end the 1994 Sephia showed a group 56?!... big hassle at my local store :P
I can only hope other stores are more flexible in the US and Canada.

It really depends where you live - You'll have to shop around weigh different factors between vendors: warranty, price, (& will they just sell you the group 55 like decent human beings! )
Where I am in Canada - Canadian tire sells 55 for 147.99 with 3 year warranty. NAPA sells it too, but in Canada it's a 177$ CAD for a NAPA Proformer (commercial battery only for this model ... therefore only 1 year warranty ).
I checked Walmart and Costco - neither carry the 55 unfortunately.
151 vs 55 In Canada, if we take Canadian Tire as an example:
Group 151 sells for 157.99 CAD (incl 20$ core charge)
Group 55 sells for 147.99 (incl. 20$ core charge)
---------
In the US Batteries Plus sells a Duracell for 125 USD incl 18$ core deposit. Not bad!
Seems like there are more options to buy 55s in the US!!
I went with the Optima Yellow top D51R and am glad I did and Use my Optima Digital 1200 Charger on it as a Maintainer and have not had a problem with it so far. I don't drive a lot during the winter so the car sits for days on end without being started and I have CB and VHF Ham Radio's in it too and that is why I went Deep Cycle with the battery and have both the Optima Digital 1200 and the Digital 400 to Maintain the battery.
To the OP- I commend you on your write up here and the sharing of the info and pics of your battery install! I think it's great to share important info like this that could benefit everyone here on the forum. I do hope you don't mind me adding a slightly different perspective here to your post since the case size you used is not as common here in the US- especially here in California.
About a year ago, I wanted to replace the stock battery in my '13 Fit sport. It was important to me, like you, to find/fit a larger case battery that could be found in stores like Costco, Sam's Club and Walmart, so if there ever was an emergency for battery replacement, I could find a replacement at a decent price and in a store chain that made the battery readily available. In doing the research for case sizes that would fit, I found cases 55,121r and 26r were the closest sized donors. I did drop the idea of the 55 case because it is not a common case size- at least not out here in Cali.
I decided on the 26r- (665 ca/ 540 cca). My idea was to remove, and modify the stock Fit battery tray so it was left completely flat by grinding off all edges that bent and went upward. I then bought a stock reproduction replacement plastic battery tray on Ebay for a '06-'11 Hyundai Accent 1.6l, which used the 121r battery that was similar tn size to the 26r battery that I used. This left the new 26r battery sitting in its own sealed battery tray that would contain any battery acid should it ever leak from the battery. I'm not going to go into a great deal of details, but I placed the new battery and tray onto the top of the stock battery tray, moved the battery and tray into it's best position and then marked/drilled/bolted the two trays together. I did have to do a little modifying of the stock battery positive cable terminal, because of it's design and the location of the positive terminal, to fit it, I've had no issues with it since it's installation a year ago.
I will consider a more detailed write-up if there's interest, but I didn't want it to seem I hijacked this thread when I was simply trying to show there's an alternative to the case size the OP used from the Canada market, and isn't as available in the US market.
