We can hope. I tend to lean towards something transparent, so I see if the rust comes back.

Linseed oil penetrates well and prevents rust. That was one benefit of my recipe of using iron oxide linseed oil paint. Pure linseed oil has a drawback of fade away due to water and sun, so the treatment has to be repeated time to time. And you don't need a gallon, just some ounces. It does not need to be organic or sterilized for this purpose.

 

I am intrigued, I will try to see if I can find out more about this.

 

OK, I think I figured out how to do this right. I watched this video:
So I can remove the molding without the windshield coming out. I ordered the molding I'll need to replace.

I will pull the old one out, clean the rust up and paint the channel with Rust Bullet.
Then I will put the grommet back in.

 

Follow up to previous: I got the molding, and after looking at it realized it was meant to attach to the glass while it's out of the car! It has a U channel with adhesive already inside. What I ended up doing was cutting the bottom flange of the U channel off and using trim cement (clear) to attach it.

By the way-I cleaned all the rust out but there was none under the molding. I ended up painting the channel with 2 coats of Rust Bullet Auto and 1 of Rust Bullet White shell before replacing the molding.
