Unhappy Rodents - a little different from the ususal

Living in the country, and as a former Vanagon cult member, I'm no stranger to mice in cars. I've fought the battle with my 2009 Fit Sport for awhile. It used to be my wife's daily driver, but as sometimes happens its been downgraded to my business daily driver, partly due to what rodent magnets these cars seem to be. So, that's my into to the forum.

In my most recent purge attempt I pulled the cabin air filter and found it urine soaked with lots of old poop. Turds were larger than mere mice, could be squirrels (3 species on my property), ground squirrels, or even rat. Everything was on top of the cabin air filter, so they're not in the internal ductwork. I've got metal mesh on top of all vehicle cabin air filters on my property just as a basic security measure. Cleaned it all out, no debris or contamination in the blower cage, sprayed lots of stuff into the system, idled it for hours blasting heat, replaced filter and dosed it with a little peppermint, and thought I had solved it. A week later I'm out on errands with my wife and 10 month old grandson and that familiar funk starts to permeate the vehicle. I pull the cabin air filter and there is fresh urine and turds. I've got a photo of the original fouled filter I could post for those with a morbid curiosity.

So, finally the question: how do do I disassemble the intake portion of the ventilation system, upstream from the cabin filter? Its not about opening the dash, they aren't inside the vehicle (right now anyway), somehow they are set up in the upper intake system. Inspection of the engine compartment doesn't reveal any gnawed holes, though there is some disturbed fiber insulation under the dash behind the engine. Sucking it up and feeling around there with my fingers did not find any holes. any insight or suggestions would be great, I'd really like to get a third 100,000 miles out of this vehicle.
