Bought a 2012 Honda Fit without a key/fob

Good afternoon,

I bought a 2013 Honda Fit and it only came with 2 regular keys no fobs. 1 of the keys is an aftermarket stratec brand that lost its programming and won’t start the car. I want a fob and would like another key. What’s the cheapest option? I would prefer to have another regular key and a fob separate.

where is the best place to get these?

Thanks,

If the key is cut can you program the transponder yourself or you need a special machine/hardware/software to program these keys to start the car?

Found this with a search on the internet:
Watch the video to the end and they show an inexpensive way to buy original oem Honda transponder keys. In the video they also show you how to self program the keys. If you decide you want everything in one key, any locksmith or hardware store with a key cutting department can cut the keys for you and then you self program them.
If you still want the transponder separate from the key, as you mentioned in the post, the video shows you how to do that also. The cut down oem key can then be used with the ignition keys that came with your car.

Since you don't have an original transponder key to your car, you don't have a way to know what the original key's FCC number is for your car. That number is found on the back of the original key case, and needs to be duplicated for the chip to talk to the security system. The Amazon keys you're looking at show the FCC number that their keys work with in their ad. FYI: The FCC number in their ad matches the FCC number on my '13 Fit sport key case.

I replaced a transponder key to an '03 Civic SI in the past and that car had more than one FCC number used with that model. If Fits used more than one FCC number, buying an aftermarket transponder key may not allow the key to link with the security system and program- if it has the wrong chip in it.

I would call the Honda dealer that put that video out, and refer to their video # and explain your situation. They can guide you from there. If only one FCC number was used for your year Fit, I would assume those keys from Amazon can be used.
EDIT: After re-watching the video I posted earlier, there is one more step that is needed to link the transponder to your car. First the transponder has to be programmed to the car by a dealer, locksmith or hardware store key cutting department. Then the procedure in the video to program the keyless remote can be done.
