Have a 2009 base model , runs fine. Tonight while driving there was a loud bang like I hit a rock. The engine runs fine but the car stopped moving. Shifting the tranny it’s clicking like crazy. No codes , no lights. Got under the car , passenger axle is snapped. Found there was a recall. Hoping Honda covers it. When I’m park the car still rolls like it’s in neutral. Can the broken axle cause this ?

 

The axle connects your wheels to the transmission and engine. Broken axle means that the wheel can turn freely regardless of which gear the transmission is in. Use your parking brake and/or wheel chocks until you get repaired.

You're in a salt state so your axle repair should be covered under the recall. It would be worth trying to get the other side replaced as well, even if you have to pay for it.

You have an open differential. If one front tire can spin freely (e.g., on a patch of ice, or in this case because the axle is broken), the other front tire doesn't do anything because all of the power (or in this case, the stopping force associated with being in Park) goes to the wheel without traction. So, the broken axle (no traction) stops moving (i.e., is in Park) and the opposite wheel and axle spin freely in the transmission. Hence, no Park. Also why you always want to use the parking brake, even in an A/T car.

This is the same reason why your car stopped when one axle broke. If you had a locking differential you could still move with a broken axle. It wouldn't be a good idea, but you could do it.

 

Thanks. Other cars I’m familiar with , this thing is still new to me and haven’t really done much to it other than oil changes so far. Next thing to find is a spare tire kit. Bought it 2nd or 3rd hand and everything was missing but I can’t find the part number on any Honda site. I’ve seen some say it never came with one which makes no sense and some on eBay for $150

 

Do you mean you don't have a spare tire?
You should have a spare (donut) tire, a scissor jack, and a combo lug nut wrench/pry bar tool.
I'm not sure that I would worry about having official Honda parts. If you find a spare tire in the correct size with the correct bolt pattern, what more do you need? The jack and lug nut wrench are generic tools. As long as the jack has a slit to fit over the jack point (which most do) it will be fine. For the lug nut wrench, as long as it fits it's good. You could even keep a socket and ratchet wrench in the car.
I would contact local junkyards to see if you can rob the parts from a wrecked Fit or other small car. Obviously you don't want a 20-year-old spare tire, but otherwise used parts will be fine.

 

Will the dealer cover the cost on a 10+ year old car?

 

no. Have a spare and all , but wanted a foam insert like the civic and every other model have. I know they make it for some fits , just a matter of finding one to fit. I know the spare is the same as newer models , hoping I can make it fit. It’s annoying to have a mess back there personally.

 

yes. It’s a safety recall , not a “ we can do better” recall like where the newer crvs get a retune to help with the oil/gas dilution
