Base Model Map Light Install

Hey all. After some research, I finally got to installing the map light that comes in the sports models on my model. The connector itself was kind of a pita to find but I got them. All the old posts don't have the pictures anymore with their instructions. So here's an updated version with photos and a schematic.

With these instructions you will have functioning map lights and hopefully one that will look like it was there from the factory. I'll also show you how to connect the lights if you want them to turn on when the doors open like the dome lights can which is optional. If you can get the whole assembly and wire connector from a junkyard that would eliminate the need to make a new one and be the best option.

Materials:
- wire strippers/cutters
- open barrel crimper
- 16g wire
- connector (optional)
- coat hanger/equivalent
- razor blade

While you do not need the connector for the map lights, if you want to do it right and have an OEM final result, this is pretty close. But hopefully this can used as a general guide, as this can be done a number of ways.
Here is a diagram of the wiring. From the factory the sport model map lights are directly connected to the dome lights. The pink wire is the wire you'll want for basic functionality. I'll explain later what to do with the blue wire if you want the lights to work with the doors.

MAKING THE CONNECTOR

1. Grab your wire and strip it until the red line in this photo. You want it so the strands of copper go past that and end at the tabs explained later.

2. Place the wire in the pin and prepare your crimper.
3. You'll want to make sure the end tabs of the connector are only going to crimp on the insulation of the wire and not the strands of copper. Once sure, you can crimp that first so as to hold the wire in place for the rest of the crimping.
4. You can now crimp the strands themselves. Make sure none of the strands are sticking out of the pin, once sure, you can crimp down on the second pair of tabs making sure they are set. Should look like this:

5 Give it a tug to make sure they installed correctly. There should be no play, and it should be one piece now.
6. The connector has a lock on it. to open it, simply push it back as seen here:

7. Take your connector now in the orientation as the photo below, and flip the pin as the photo displays too. Insert the pin into the connector until you hear a click. The pin should be all the in as the second photo shows. If all that checks out. You now have the connector ready for install.

CUTTING HOLE IN HEADLINER

1. You'll now be cutting a hole into the headliner indent that is for the map light. So make sure to have a new razor or anything to make a clean cut.
2. CAREFULLY start with a small hole as seen in this photo.

You'll want to gradually cut away, then measure, then cut as many times as necessary until you have a snug fit. It's about half an inch from the edge of the indent, from all sides, as seen in the photo.

These two photos are of the final hole that fit around the base of the map light perfectly.

3. You'll see the bracket is already in there with the two holes needed for the final install but we're not there yet.
Insert the map light assembly to make sure the holes line up. The reference of the cut being about half an inch from the edge of the indent should be enough play so that you can manipulate the assembly to get it perfect when it's time to final install.
4. If you find the fit to be too tight, be sure to look at all sides the and make sure to note which side of the headliner is being tugged up with the assembly. The tabs on the base of the assembly should be easy enough to be inserted light pressure and not with a struggle at all.
5. Assuming you have the cut as you like it. Grab a coat hanger because it's time to snake the wire through the headliner.

INSTALLING THE MAP LIGHT

1. Uninstall the dome light. Pry off the lens and you'll see two bolts. You can use a Phillip's screwdriver but try not to strip them, they are technically for JIS screwdrivers.
2. With the assembly off, you'll see connector to the dome light. Disconnect it and set the assembly aside for now.
3. If you happen to have made the connector first, the only way to snake the wire is through the map light hole first so that the connector side is hanging out of the hole you cut for the map light which is what I did so that I didn't have to install the pin and connector over my head. If you're not using the connector or are doing it differently I think going through the dome light first is easiest but who knows.
4. I ended up using a long really thin piece of metal to snake the wire through. BE PATIENT. This was pretty annoying to do because there's a roof support going door to door attached to the roof that will block your tool from passing through the headliner. You'll probably yank out some fuzzy bits from the headliner which is fine but best avoided if possible. What helped me was using something thing and curved downwards.

5. Once you've snaked the wire through, home stretch now.
6. Go to the dome light side, find the pink wire, and tap into it using a T-Tap. This is the easiest way.

And since the wire on the dome light end is open you just need to crimp it into the connector the T-Tap comes with. Strip the wire so that copper strands go into most the connector, then crimp. The clamp goes about 2 inches above the dome light connector as seen on this photo:

7. Once the wire has been tapped into, you're pretty much done!
8. Connect the dome light back, and make sure to tuck the wires to make sure nothings in the way.
9. Test the map light. Since the pink wire (as far as I know) is always hot, connect your map light assembly and see if it works. There's not much that can go wrong here, only the tapped pink wire. So make sure your bulbs are new ( I suggest LEDS) and make sure your tap is connected well. I've heard that the switches on the map lights can go bad but i feel like that's less likely to happen.
10. DONE.

Not a bad little project. The map light should have been in the base models from the factory. Hopefully this helps whoever wants to do this. Just wanted to put my perspective out there.

That's a lot of work for a light. I feel kind of sorry cause I rarely ever use mine on my Sport trim. Missing the final pic of the installed light.
