Question intermittent - no tach

CORRECTION - the tach kept working but the speedometer stopped working, I used the GPS to monitor speed.
I have a 2009 Fit Sport, ~283K miles. A few weeks ago, I was going about 75 MPH, the car jumped/jerked, speedometer stopped working, the ABS light flashed, and the Drive light blinked, I guess for a minute, then I think that I realized that the engine was revving very high, like it would not shift up, probably out of 3rd gear. To keep the rpms about 2K, I would go about 40MPH. I turned the engine off and back on and still wouldn't shift, until the next day, like it had to cool off? I drove it again several times longer than the time that it took to start the problem before but not the same full issue again.
But now I can see that it has done the same initial symptoms several times, the car jumps, jerks, cruise control cuts off, I may see the tach go down for a split second but then everything goes back to normal, no indication of the shifting issue.
The speed sensor was replaced 3 years ago.

Have you checked the ATF level? When was it last changed?

The blinking Drive light indicates a transmission fault, so that would be the place to start, and the best way to start (after checking your fluid level) would be to check for trouble codes.

Thumbs up Atf

I did check the ATF and added probably a half of a quart or more. No codes found and the mechanic said the fluid level wouldn't cause the issues and to bring the vehicle in when the issue is happening. But as I have thought about it more, it seems the fluid level could have certainly caused the shifting issue. Maybe the tach related issue triggered the shifting issue and the low fluid allowed it, is why the shifting was a one time issue.

Low fluid is not great. With 283K miles, I am more curious about how old the fluid is and if it has been consistently low for a long time. Old ATF can definitely cause all sorts of transmission issues. Old and low fluid is undoubtedly worse - the additives have broken down, the fluid is full of wear particles and other contaminants, and there's not as much fluid in the system meaning what is there will consistently be hotter

You have to also consider that at 283K miles the A/T is probably approaching or past the end of its (expected) lifespan. If it has had less than stellar maintenance (not clear to us at the moment), that notion becomes almost a certainty.
