I have a deposit with a different dealer in Houston, and I have an email from the sales guy saying my price is $17,580 (MSRP for AT Sport) plus any accessories I may want (assuming they have them). If they try to tack on a BS fee, I will go John Belushi on them right on the show room floor.

I bought mine 3 weeks ago and I had a $1500 mark up value. I live in San Diego. just about every dealer was sold out on the Honda Fit Sports 08.

I was able to get Tidewater Blue though.

fully loaded fit sport(manual) ended up being 18,500 with markup +tax etc.

It's simple.

Walk away. Do not pay it. That mark up is the dealership preying on you and your wants. You may be able to get it somewhere else for MSRP. But, if you cannot, is it that much of a deal to wait a month or two or three to save $1000?

It's not about affording it. I am sure you can. It's the principal of paying $1000 for nothing.

If you know your credit is good negotiate the interest rate.

With the Fits demand now there's not much more you can do unfortunately.

That's the EXACT reason we pay $1000 over!!! No other reason. Simply because they can, and people will still buy it.

You know what an extra $1,000 gets you?
Immediate depreciation and your dick in your hand!
For the guy who think he can collect cans for an extra $2.70 a day, that must really allow you to make a decent living when your not rummaging trash cans.

Go find a dealer out in the boonies way out of the city. When I bought an Odyssey in 2001, the NYC dealers wanted $1000 or more and you had to wait 6 wks. Two hours north in Albany, the exact model was waiting for me at MSRP. I bought it in 18 minutes complete. Rented a car one way and drove it home.

So that pretty much shattered my dreams of driving away with a new '09 Fit next week.

I CANNOT justify spending that much for a sub-compact car...no matter how much I like it or want one

This sucks...
There are dealers who do not charge more than MSRP. If you are unlucky, maybe you don't have one within driving distance, but I'll be not.

I got a 6.50% APR on my car. the fact was, there were no fit sports in my area. very limited..so I guess that is why they marked up the value. but I decided to choke it down.

I was driving a 04 f150 v8 5.4L. drive 100miles a day. $5 a gallon on gas. 10-13 miles a gallon...

now im getting 33mpg+.. mathematics. I still saving bunch of money a month...lol

Market Adjustment

Ok, so I bought a Fit personally for invoice during a time that I was not selling cars , since then I have gone to back to car sales. Knowing that, take my comments for whatever you think they are worth.

Supply and demand. Simple concept. I see nothing wrong with dealers asking for the extra grand because there are people that will pay for it(the MSRP is clearly stated and people that pay over sticker know it, they are not being conned). That does not mean you need to get bummed out or think of the dealers as thieves, just take it for what its worth. Fits have shit profit in them, but are one of the hottest products on the market, that doesn't make sense from a business standpoint.

Asking and getting are two different things, I have always believed the best way to buy cars is to build a relationship with your dealer. Talk to a salesman, if he treats you right, be honest with him. Tell him you don't want to pay 1000 over, you'd rather give the business to him, but at MSRP. I guarantee you they will do it.(Even though they will literally sell the car within 24 hours at markup if you don't buy it anyway).

Patience is very important. Fits are in high demand and low supply. You may WANT to pay over sticker to get what you want, its just the cost of convenience.

In my opinion, I don't think its wrong that the dealer wants over sticker, ultimately, you decide if you want to pay that or not based on how long you're willing to wait or how hard you're willing to search for the car you want.

Also,
you can just PM me and I can hook you up for MSRP (lol) my dealer is in Cathedral City, CA. I only have black and silver coming in for the next few shipments. The first on the lot is SSM.

Supply and demand is great for the dealerships and works for those that aren't resourceful as a buyer of a car. Every Squirrel gets a nut.

Think of it this way. A one-way plane ticket and a motel room to any city in the country is less than $500. That still leaves you $500 to spend on gas and motels driving your new Fit on the way back. If it's closer you save that much more. Send e-mails to all the dealers in your area, increasing the radius until you find one that will offer MSRP -- and they are out there. If it costs less than $500 to get there and $500 to get back, you will come out ahead.

Then again, maybe you are all correct, maybe all the dealers out there are going to be happy with just making the $600 or so front end profit and all the salesman out there are going to be falling all over each other to make a mini ($100) commission to sell this car for less than the short supply deams it will bring. In all seriousness, if he does find one that will sell him the exact car he wants for MSRP I think he will be extremely lucky. Didn't we see dealers asking $2K-$3K over MSRP a few months ago on remaining 08's? If the dealers didn't think people will buy it for what ever they ask for it, they would lower the price. Has anyone ever thought that the dealers are marking it up a $1000 to discount it to MSRP so the customer feels like he got a deal? So paying MSRP will sit better with them?

BTW Fitlurker, .67 X 30 = 20.10 X 60 (the average car loan today) = 1206.00 including iterest for 5 years (assuming he has $hitty credit and can't get better than 9% or so interest rate). If he is like the average American and only keeps his car for 3-3 1/2 years it only comes to 725 - 845.

I'll bet more than a few on this forum pi$$ away 3 times that on booze/lottery tickets/pay per view porn/cigarettes...etc... in a year, let alone on 4 - 5 years and have absolutely nothing to show for it. Just my $.02
In your earlier comment to another poster on this same identical topic, you note: "I suppose your time is worth nothing." Well, how much was your time worth in your above lengthy reply?

Here is yet another way to look at that $1000 markup. The very second you sign the papers and the car is yours, that money is gone. You don't even have to drive it off the lot.

Go back in there and ask them if they are marking up their trade-in price $1000. If they are not (and I would bet you $1000 they are not), tell them you won't pay a penny over MSRP. They can take your money and give you a car, or you will go to another dealer who likes your money better than they do. Don't let those ignorant pricks beat you.

The Stealership is going to call me as soon as they have my Fit on the lot. At that time, if we cannot agree on the price, I will take my business elsewhere. If I have to spend more time shopping around, so be it.

Bottom line: I WILL NOT PAY AN EXTRA $1,000

It's not that I can't afford it. It's the principle. I'll keep you guys posted on what happens.
