Regret buying Fit!!
Last summer (2007), my '91 Integra was rear-ended. The car was a write-off and I was forced to buy a new car. Needless to say, I was not too happy, as I was waiting to trade in my Integra for the 2009 Fit. My first choice at the time was the Mazda 3 Sport hatchback. However, I couldn't justify the extra price ($21K for the Mazda vs. $15k for the Fit here in Canada). I really wished that Mazda Canada offered the base Mazda 3 hatch with the 2.0L 148 hp engine that is available everywhere else in the world except in North America. Well guess what... they now offer the 2009 base Mazda 3 GX hatch in Canada with fog lamps, sports exhaust, 15" steel wheels all for $15,895! For me, this is a no-brainer. For $1000 more, I could get a Mazda 3 hatch, with 148 hp, a much better quality interior, even in comparison to the 2009 Fit! A step up in class (compact car vs. B class car). I would just get the base model and put in 17" wheels, tint the windows etc... the possibilities are endless! I think this is the biggest bang for the buck!! Check out the specs for the Mazda 3 Sport GX:

16K M3 hatch?
I have an 08 fit and don't regret it but I liked the M3 hatch as well but, as you said 21K killed the deal. Are you saying the 09 M3 hatch can be had for 16K???? If so that might be definite fit competitor.
blah blah blah. you jumped the gun now you are blaming canada. you made the conscious decision to buy the fit, blame yourself for not talking to mazda dealers. Now that the mazda has pricing you like, you no longer like the fit....THAT IS HILARIOUS!
go shoot yourself in the foot with a bb gun.

Yes, the Mazda 3 hatch can be had for $16K. Only in Canada though, not the US.
I do still like my 2007 Fit. It is a lot of fun to drive and has very responsive go-kart handling.. and it has a huge cargo capacity for the size of the car.. and it's got great fuel economy.
It's just that... for $1000 more, you get SO MUCH MORE with the Mazda 3. It has a much more expensive feeling interior, is a bigger car, is a quicker more powerful car, and most importantly (and I think most people will agree with me here), the styling is so much more beautiful (inside and out). The Fit is just butt ugly in comparison to a Mazda 3!! (I bought the Fit for the characteristics mentioned above, and not for the styling)

I was just doing this comparison on friday (canadian).
Mazda3 GX hatch with air con and comfort package - 22k (GS for 24.5k)
Fit Sport - 23.2k
All the other specs on the mazda3 are comparable or better except for the 15" wheels on the GX. I like this car too
But at the end of the day i'm still liking the fit because its
- smaller (length and width), lighter, better on gas
- newer (mazda3 has been around since 2004?)
It all depends on the type of car you want.
Also I have that fear of thieves kicking the driver side (under the door handle) to try and pop the door open. I see a dent on the same spot on 50% of the mazda3s in vancouver!

I sat in the Mazdaspeed 3 and the new 09 Fit. The seating area for the front and the back seats are roomier in the new 09 Fit than the Mazdaspeed 3 but Mazda does have larger cargo area behind the back seat so I think they are about the same size interior wise just the 09 Fit allocated more room for the rear passenger than the rear cargo.
Hmm... unless you could've foreseen the future, there's not much you could've done about it. How about you not fret, keep saving money w/ your Fit, and then buy something better than both a few years from now. Trading it in after having it for such a short time would be a waste, even if you justified the $1k premium of the 3.
2 things.. 1. Why are you posting your love for a Mazda car on FitFreak? This a place for people that love their Fit and wish to keep it. 2. That Mazda is ugly ugly. WHile she may have a small engine, the Fit is a beautiful car!
Although Mazda Makes A Far Superior Car Than A Ford Or Chevy
IMHO they are not in the same league as Toyota or Honda in terms of QUALITY. As for other issues that is another topic. My S2000 was of better build quality than my 2007 Miata yet I enjoyed the Miata much more when cruising than my Honda. The Honda was always being revved to keep it from dogging out and the Miata had alot more low end to it. It was also more comfortable. But if I was buying STRICTLY for QUALITY then the Honda wins hands down. Read the reviews on the Miata and S2000 and you will catch my drift.
Maybe you forget to consider the resale value. It's not like you're comparing two Hondas, but another one is Mazda. I looked at the used Mazda 3 last time and the price just fall like a bungee jump. On the other hand, the Honda fit GD hold the resale value very good. I'm currently having an Acura and will buy an new Honda Fit for my sis.

I'm comparing both GD1 and GD2 to the Mazda 3 Sport GX. Mazda 3 Sport GX, in my opinion, beats them both in terms of styling, performance and value. As far as reliability (which is also very important), I agree that the Fit will probably be more reliable than the Mazda.
The '91 Integra is still my all time favourite car. It had timeless styling/design, a high quality interior, a high quality sounding engine. Plus, it had bullet-proof reliability. Wish they still made them... I would buy another one!
