Send a letter to your Presodent. He knows all about tire pressure tips.

you only send a letter to him if he doesn't know anything about tire pressure. anyway we alll need to conserve fuel. I just don't know how to w/ my Fit.

I am throwing a fit now...

p.s what's this "presodent" thing? is that a dental product?

Since you only filled up once, it's likely that your first tank that the dealer filled it up with had a lot of gas when they filled it up, meaning whatever pump they used stopped pumping late. And maybe on YOUR fill up whatever pump you used didn't fill it up enough, hence your low mileage.

I'm sure your mileage will be different on your next fill up.

I sure hope so. I will report to the board as soon as I get my second tank. If it's low, I will take it to the dealer and cry, in front of all their potential customers.

My first posting here...

I did my first highway trip in my new '09 Fit this week, 175 miles each way, with 6,000 of elevation gain and loss. Going up, the MPG meter read 36.9 mpg, actual MPG (as measured by mileage and actual fuel consumption) was 34.9 mpg. Coming back down, the MPG meter read 38.9 mpg, actual MPG was 35.5 (strong headwind most of the way).

I don't mind the meter having an offset, but being inconsistent is more annoying.

how do i know if i am in low gear or not? i am using an automatic. in fact i am totally gear-illiterate. if i want to go fast i press the gas. if i want to go slow i press the break. if i want to maintain the same speed i use cruise control. if i am in danger i panic. if i am comfortable i day-dream...

driving should be easy, brainless. yes i have driven to destinations w/o knowing how i got there. i depend on auto-pilot instincts. i have a lot of respect to those who drive a manual. to me that's like rocket science.

I hope I don't find you "driving" behind me one of these days.

About 4-5 mpg off

My hand calculations usually show high 30's, with the best tank @ 42 mpg. The computer shows 4-5 mpg more though. I find I get better mileage with a soft foot in around the town driving than highway driving. I wish we had a 6th gear or taller 5th.

I've done 4 or 5 tanks now and it's been pretty consistent. 40-42 mpg on the computer, ~36 when calculating by hand.

Glad to hear its not just me.

When I fill the tank, I let it get to the automatic shut off and that's it. I don't try to add extra gas. This makes it consistent each time I fill up. Also use the same gas station and brand of gas (it's close to my house). One thing I do is set the nozzle on the slowest filling mark, so the gas goes in slow. I read that this is the best way to get gas in the tank. Alos, cuz I live in Hot Phoenix, I try to gas up in the morning when it's cooler. At hotter temps, the gas expands and you get less of it (or so I'm told). I keep a record of MPG and just do it on a calculator. Also been told that some gas is cheap/dosen't have additives, so better to use a name brand. I use Chevron but have also used Valero, which I see in So Calif but is fairly new to Phoenix. I do wish Honda would adjust that computer, cuz it kinda gives Honda a bad reputation, like the odometer thing (said you had driven a mile when you'd driven maybe 3/4 of a mile - made the warrenty come up sooner than it should have and a class action suit was filed).

The tanks are underground, minimal temperature fluctuation.
