Fed up with USB connection issues
I'm getting really irritated with my connection problems, it seems like almost any time I hit a sizeable bump in my Fit, or when i'm driving hard and jolt the car from a gear change, my iPod disconnects from the head unit, it doesn't physically disconnect, but it loses its connection to where the car stops playing music.
Then sometimes when I connect it back up, it will say "unreadable" or something of the sort....
Also, sometimes when I connect it back, it will be fine for a while, then i'll hit another sizeable bump, or shift hard again, and it does the same all over again.
I'm wondering if anyone else's issues are as bad as mine.....wondering if maybe a new usb cord for my iPod might help my troubles, but they are rather expensive so I wanted to see if anyone else is having these problems and if you've consulted Honda about it....i'm hesitant to because I know they'll take the car on a drive and it won't have the connection problems that it has when I drive....just the bitch of it.
I did a quick search but didn't find anything about my problems, my apologies if there's a thread on the subject already - link me if there is...
Thanks!

Some things to consider:
If you're ipod uses a small hdd instead of flash memory, the bumps will cause the ipod hdd to have read errors.
The connections for the Ipod and USB connector may be loose. This happens with my old cell phone.
Try putting some music on a USB Flash drive and see if it still has that problem. If it does, then it may be a loose connection with the head unit or wiring issues.
I have my music on a 16GB USB Flash drive, hasn't skipped once. I go over railroad tracks Mon-Fri.

Thanks for the input fellas!
Good luck with finding a solution.
Alright, good info! Thanks a lot, i'm gonna try a sponge or something soft and lay it in the compartment where I keep the iPod and see if it laying on something soft may help my issues.

I love my 32 G flash drive, good way to go and tiny!
I have an 80GB model with a HDD of course and have never had it skip or lose connection.
I would say first, swap out your USB cable (borrow someone's) and floor it over some speedbumps
. If it persists, take it to the dealer and have them replace the integrated cable.
Also, like most have mentioned, go with a flash drive. For me, I rely too heavily on my iPod, sync it constantly as I add music or playlists, so I want it updated in my car everyday (also Genius playlists RULE). If you don't care about that stuff, go with a flash drive.
Lastly, if all is not resolved, your iPod is probably jacked. If you can, have Apple replace it, or just buy a new one.

FWIW, my Ipod is plugged into the Apple USB cord that came with it, and is sitting loose, in the upper glove box with no padding, nothing special. In fact, in several years of running Ipods connected to one car or another, I cannot recall dropouts or skipping ever being an issue. I do remember (back in the days when I still used CD's in the car) having the in-dash CD occasionally skip over a hard bump. Not the Ipod though.
I would be looking for a connection issue--either the head unit in the fit, the cable running out of it to the glove box, or the Ipod USB cable. Except for the Ipod USB cable, it should be a warranty item.
I also agree with you on the convenience factor of an Ipod over a flash drive. Flash drives are cheaper--that's the only advantage, as far as I'm concerned.
I'm running a 40gb "Third Generation" iPod that's been kicking hard for 6 years on a HDD and it never skips through my '08 Fit's aux jack. Me thinks the HDD is a straw man. There's something wrong with the connection or that cable.
I hear all you guys, I don't think its an actual problem with the iPod because I forgot to mention that i've used the same iPod in my '91 Civic for over a year with no connection problems ever, and the Civic rides quite a bit more harsh than the Fit does, but I also had a brand new Alpine deck with the built in iPod cable, it was a beefier connector but the same connector nontheless.
So yeah i'm thinking it may be in the cable, i'm gonna look online to see how much a new apple cable is and try that first I think.
Thanks for all the helpful advice!

I connect to a ipod touch. I've noticed that if I connect the ipod touch after the car is started sometimes the fit can't connect. Will take repeated attempts for it to work. Anyone else have this issue? Seems to work better if I connect first then start the car.
I definitely recommend this retractable iPod cable I bought, and have been using with complete success with my iPhone (0G v2.2 (5G77)).
The Source By Circuit City : iPod Cables - SCOSCHE IPOD RETRACTABLE USB CABLE
The retractable feature makes connecting/disconnecting/answering phone much easier and keeps the upper glove box neat and tidy.
I bought mine at The Source (on sale) and for $5 extra got a 3 year "no questions" warranty. If it fails for any reason (as these little gadgets can and do), free replacement. No matter how many times it fails. Great product, great warranty, highly recommended.

I suggest a USB flash drive for storing/listening to music in the car as well. I have one that I use specifically for that and it works great. Alot better than my iPod did and I can leave it in the car all the time and not worry about someone breaking in and stealing my $200 iPod. All they will get is my $25 flash drive.
