What is this?

Anyone know what this is and its intended purpose? I just noticed it when I was checking my oil.

every car I have ever had has a serial number stamped on the firewall or a serial number plate.
Since the Fit has such a plastic and sheet metal shrouded firewall they give you an access panel. So it it what it says. Never shined a flashlight in there cause I am 98% sure this is correct.

I figured it would be self-explanatory. But the frame number is located behind that panel. If you are looking for it, you found it. Other than that, the compartment does not have another purpose. Unless you want to hide some "stuff" for your "friend". LOL

OK, related question: why is this gap in the cowling (the one in the center of the constrained picture below)?

I guess it is glaringly obvious what it is.....kinda thought it might have been a feature for another market. Like maybe a plate there instead of a plastic "dummy panel"

I think it is room so the panels can slide into each other for removal.
And I should know this because I had that whole cowling apart when I changed springs. But being ADHD I concentrated with tunnel vision on the springs and i FORGOT to check that,

I noticed that gap yesterday whilst cleaning the windscreen. Probably there because of flexing of the cowl/front end. Plastic being more brittle than steel, the put the gap in to prevent the plastic from shattering. Looks a bit daff, though!
