About to Drive to Vegas

Well I am packing up (just waiting on the wife now) and getting ready to drive 5 hours to Vegas for the weekend. We have a V8 Toaureg we could take, if we want to get 14 miles per gallon and have to put premium in to boot, but we would be riding in style and comfort. But we are taking the Fit and I don't think I am going to be regretting the choice. I look forward to putting some miles on the ol' Grey Fox (my name for the Fit) and I am going to love getting 35+ mpg on the way out there too. I'll let you know if I change my mind when I get back....

I took my Fit from LA to Vegas and back. Going there I carried my parents and our baggage in the heat of October. So with A/C, people and baggage and uphills doing mostly 70mph the FE gauge read 42 mpg IIRC. On the way back it was just me, but with A/C doing mostly 70 mph and the gauge read 45.9, but that was with strong headwinds for just about the entire drive and some steep grades.

The ride and drive was great. It was comfy and relatively quiet, and thanks to my 35% tint, it stayed very cool. You see!! The Fit DOES make a decent highway car!

Enjoy your trip!

Haha, I just got my tinted last weekend so I'm sure I will be appreciating that too. And I get to try out the Scan Gauge II I got off Craig's List for $75 too!

have fun with the drive. i just did it 2 weeks ago and we made it all the way to Vegas with only one tank of gas. not sure if you'll be so lucky considering memorial day traffic.

Thumbs up

i remember the first time i took my GD to vegas. i had a trunk full of luggage, one passenger, and one of the seats folded down in cargo mode to carry more luggage. i calculated 39mpg going 80mph all the way and sometimes 100mph when i wasn't paying attention.

one tank will take you all the way to vegas and then some. GD/GE FTMFW

You guys have a pleasant and safe drive to Vegas and back!
Look forward to your feedback on how the FiT performed and of course
ride comfort.

Take care.

I did Vegas last weekend with my GE.

5 people. 5 carry-on sized bags. LA-Vegas in 4 1/2 cause of traffic on the 15. There's a section of the 15 with a 55mph zone.

Nice ride. I felt bad for my car going uphill though. Kept a good pace of about 80. I could have made it the whole way without stopping but we ate in Barstow and I gased up so i wouldn't have to gas up again until leaving.

With so many people and luggage the car felt very stable. I liked the way it felt because it was grounded in the wind.

I was messing with a Prius about half the trip too.

Have fun! Since it's a long weekend I hope you're going to some of the parties.

Oh, one feature I got to use during our trip was the rear seat under cavity for one of our bags. It's such an underrated thoughtful feature that exists only because of the magic seat functions. So not only did that free up space in the cargo area for bigger luggages, but the bag under the seat is placed in the middle of the car and low for better center of gravity.

i once made the mistake of driving to vegas from chino hills on a friday afternoon during 4th of jul weekend. left at 2 pm thinking i'd get there in 5 hrs even with a bit of traffic...reasonable assumption given it normally takes less than 4. 8 hrs later i finally pulled into the parking lot at wynn.

happy driving and good gaming.

Alright well I got back yesterday afternoon and I've had some time to recover and relax from the drive.

First things first, MPG, after arriving in Vegas with a quarter tank left, driving around for a couple days on the strip and finally filling up with an 1/8 tank left I calculated about 34 MPG, I drove one more day on the strip and then left, arrived back home with a quarter tank again and filled up immediately, calculated 38 mpg. I was driving 5-10 mph over the speed limit most of the time, and I think I only broke 80 mph once, used cruise control as much as possible. We hit a couple of hours of traffic going out there but coming back yesterday it was traffic free except for the stupid agricultural check point.

As far as the drive goes it was pretty comfortable, it was just me and my wife and a couple of bags so we had plenty of room. I drove all 5 hours each way and I was VERY glad to have cruise control. I was definitely taking my time getting out there and I saw my fair share of crazy drivers; and for some strange reason EVERY Prius I saw was flying along in the left lane, I guess they figure they can get 40 mpg driving 90 mph so they might as well do it. I even saw a new Insight cruise by me doing 15+ the speed limit.

One of my small complaints was I wish I had more power when we started hitting the hilly section of the drive, but i know that is the compromise I have to make for getting such good gas mileage so I'm not really concerned. The navigation worked great on the trip and getting us from our hotel to the casinos and back.

The only real fault I can give the car was the A/C. I feel really bad for anyone living in AZ or any desert, because coming back when we were in the middle of the desert at 2pm the A/C was going full blast and it was just barely keeping the cabin cool, it was probably about 105 or 110 outside. Not even my new window tint could help. Besides that I was very happy with my new ride and I look forward to making more road trips. Road noise wasn't an issue since we were listening to music the whole time, but I am still considering haveing a shop put some sound deadening material in the doors and hatch area. And I am really considering having 50% tint put on the windshield, it is so light I don't think it would even be noticeable and it would just help that much more with heat and glare.

Anyone with thoughts or comments I would love to hear. And thanks for sharing all of your Vegas drive stories.
