We need to start a support group. I thought about taking pictures at the dealership but could not bring myself to do it. You all are right, it was like taking a family pet to the pound knowing it would be put down.

I don't get it. Why do it if it is something you truly valued? It is not like $4500 would truly keep you from owning a fit if you wanted it. Keep both.

1999 Dodge Durango. 140K miles, an exhaust leak, blown shocks and locked into four wheel drive. It wasn't worth anything and I was ready to scrap it when this program came along.
I did love that thing when it ran strong. I couldn't get it stuck in the snow or mud even if I wanted to. I've pulled many a single-purpose off-road trucks out of the snow with my completely stock Durango. Probably won't be doing that any time soon with the FIt!

Traded our 1994 Audi Quattro wagon for a White base manual '09 Fit. It was sad taking the car to be put down but I grabbed a few parts for my friends to use on their Audis.
These Fits are soooooo nice! Reminds me of what Hondas were like in the mid eighties. We got the car about 4 hours before they suspended the program.

peoples1234, The title to this post was meant to be a lighthearted way to talk about our cash for clunker experiences. It seem that I have struck a nerve for a lot of us that I didn't even realize until I started reading all of the responses.
As much as I cared for my Jeep it was only worth about a thousand dollars or less in trade. It was worth much more to me personally especially since I had just put over a thousand dollars in it for new tires and brakes and a new windshield over the last six months. It all came down to the numbers, if anyone else had offered me $4500 for my Jeep I would have gladly sold it to them (or you).
The money was too good to pass up. That does not keep me from feeling badly for what will happen to my Jeep. This was a win-win for my wife and I as I will be getting her 2004 Volkswagen Jetta TDI.
It wasn't personal, it was business.
I'm glad for you that you have the means to keep both what you want and what you can afford, we can't.

My hatred for CFC knows no bounds. Why do I have to pay tax money for this garbage to subsidize other peoples purchases? (or maybe I'm just butthurt that my tbird had 1 mpg too many to be eligible)

This may be sad for Volvo owners: my 1992 740 Turbo Wagon qualified for the CfC. It had only 145,000 miles on it. However it had a clacky engine (rod-knock?) and the blower motor was gone. A bottom-end rebuild and a new blower motor would have been expensive.
I bought a Honda Fit because the $4500 was too good to pass up.
However, I stripped out every valuable part out of it before turning my 745 over to the Honda dealer. Alloy rims, turbo, leather seats, etc.
Who else is feeling bad about turning in their "clunker?"

I loved the trunk that I turned in, but there is more to it than just money or loving the car. My wife and I had 2 cars, a 2006 BMW 325ci and My clunker S10 Blazer. I put about 30k miles on the BMW last year, loved every minute of it, but only put about 3k on the blazer. Obvious choice about which car i picked to drive to work everyday. When had been planning on getting another car with cheaper miles and the time was right!

I also just traded my 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport with 150K miles for a Fit / nav. Loved that jeep but 16 mpg just wasn't cutting it. Little sad seeing the Jeep in the rear view mirror of the Fit knowing that it was going to be euthanized - but after my first hiway ride with 40 mpg no love lost.

We chucked a 95 Mazda MPV but I wasn't sad about it at all. My wife was a little sad (actually she was sad when we were looking and was mostly okay when we left the MPV). We'd had the MPV 7 years or so and it was from her (formerly last) grandma.
We miss the hauling capacity (we could shove multiple 6' bookcases in the MPV... and did yearly!) but realistically since we have a house and aren't moving every year or two, it doesn't make sense to keep that much capacity.
I tend to agree with Lyon that the program wasn't the brightest idea ever, but I'm not going to turn down free government money if they're throwing it in the streets. We'd been planning on running the MPV into the ground and looking at a new car in 3-5 years when the plug-in electrics and further hybrids come out. Could have probably done it too, the MPV was in good shape for 15 years old and only passed 100k miles last year (we only do ~5k miles a year).

'88 Astro van, 168K miles. Keeping the former daily driver, '93 Escort wagon 5-speed as a winter car, bought a Fit Sport. Love the Fit. It's one of the few new cars that can haul as much as the old Escort and beat the Escort's MPG.

the head gasket was gone, the radiator,amp leak.
I drove it in with crossed fingers and a prayer rug.
It's body was perfect. it looked so good the sales manager asked why we were using C4C ... the sales guy shushed him
I felt so bad leaving the suv there with all the rusted out cracked body C4C cars (most were fords, then jeeps, then a bit of everything)

Killed a '94 Dodge truck. 143k, transmission slipping, lots of bad suspension noises, but the A/C and power seat still worked. No regrets there.
OTOH I also sold a '99 Civic that had been in the family since new. THAT one made me sad--till I drove off the lot in my new OR Sport 5MT.
