K&N Drop-In: Better MPG?
#43
Call me crazy, but after I put in a K&N filter I don't notice the low speed noise as much. Coincidence?

I blow out my air cleaner element every 15000 miles or so
On my Tacoma that has 143,000 miles, I'm on my 3rd air filter.
The truck has always had a Scan Gauge on it, and the mpg is always the same. Dirty filter or not. I guess the computer, cuts down the amount of fuel, when the air is restricted. I may have lost some power, but no0t enough to feel.

I used to run drop in K&N filters in a Suzuki Samurai, a 1300cc wonder that I kept til 250k miles. Never saw a discernible increase in power or fuel economy. Gave up on them when I read one of their blurbs that said the filter's filtering got better with use as it built up more junk on the outside of it. WTF, so it's better when it's dirty? Give me a break...as far as I'm concerned it is all snake oil and hype. Maybe the full K&N air intake helps, but that's not legal on the road in CA, which is where I am. So I stay stock filter and check it every 10k miles.

Don't expect any.... if you spend the majority of your time at expressway speeds in a manual, then maybe minuscule amounts improvement in mpg. if driven right you can also get minuscule improvements by getting up to cruising speeds slightly faster. I would expect any claimed gains to be akin to the placebo effect.
It'll give you an edge on power when you mash it but you still have those additional 7 90 degree bends in the intake over moving to the full k&n intake. little bit more power, little better throttle response, but the big payoff is if you own the car in the long term the savings in filter replacement.

09 MTX, 80K on stock, 10k on K&N full intake (stock everything else). My MPG has gained slightly, From 43.7 to 4.46 (also dropped from 4x20 to 0x20 synth oil). Definitely more power lower in the torque curve for delivering when needed, there is an appreciable difference from stock... but no real difference from stock milage (other than what I attribute to only the oil). Defintely go for it if you can.
