Door Thunk Poll!!
#5
I'm coming from my 95 Cougar, in which the driver side door sagged over the past six months. I had to lift that heavy door up every time I closed it. Pain, but doable from the outside. Hell from the inside pulling it closed while pulling it up! Do I like the way the Fit doors thunk? I'm in love, a little bit of lust, and I still get teary eyed at how light they are and how beautiful they sound. My arm is getting back feeling agin too. And I go easy on the Fit doors too.
It seems I have PTDSS- post traumatic door sag syndrome.

The only thing that I liked more when I test drove the Yaris was how much more sturdy the door felt and sounded. Otherwise, it sucked. So I went with the Fit.
I voted No, I think the fit is a much nicer vehicle overall, but the door thunk is just not as solid as I like.

I love the quietness of the doors shutting with the windows up and I do notice they rattle a lot more when shutting them when the windows are down.
My gf has a 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 2dr and those doors are sooo heavy and loud compared to mine... she tends to slam my doors on the Fit a lot harder than she should just cause she's so used to the heaviness of her doors and I have to remind her to be gentle

i dont have any major issues...maybe a little more clunky when the windows are down..but i've never had a car that sounded good closing with the windows down.... the most solid door i had was my supercharged 3800 buick, but it probably weighed a ton so whats left to rattle?

The Fit is definitely heavier than my old VW was. And probably more than any cars I've had which had non-power windows. It's also heavier and sounds more solid. Not too hard too close. I have various pains, so it DOES matter how much effort is required.
I've noticed pain/problems for ME with the hatch. It's awkward for ME to close. I'm still learning what amount of power is needed to close the hatch. I would have liked a handle-proper on the outside for the hatch, so I could pull it down gently, and then grasp the outside handle and finish the job.
I'm not sure if the trim is intended to serve that purpose, the black part over the license plate and where the hidden opening handle is located, so I don't use it for shutting the hatch.
Actually, I haven't looked to see if this is covered in the owner's manual. I should.
The fastest way to make anything break is to use it improperly. A power hatch close would be nice, I suppose that could be added via one of the places that adapts cars to disabled folks.
I LOVE how the Fit doors open sooooo wide. And then I curse them when I get in the car and can't reach the door. I'm not tall. I don't have orangutan arms.

More than any other vehicle I've ever owned, the Fit feels built down to a target weight. It feels remarkably solid over bumps, even our frost-heaved roads, but panels in the door, fenders and roof feel a little, well, flimsy. Now, all that said, the doors close just fine.
Weight is the enemy of efficiency, so there's a reason for things as they are. I tend to keep cars awhile (the Jeep and the VW have 160K between 'em), so ask me what I think in five years.

I actually like the sounds of the door closing and believe it or not, it sounds more solid than my 1988 Lincoln ever did. I must have gotten a Tuesday Fit because it goes "fwoomp" with no ratting or odd noises of any kind.
