Hello Everyone,

I am new to the forums, so I apologize if I haven't posted this question in the right place. I have a 2009 Honda Fit Sport, that I pick up last year. I also picked up some 16" Yokohama IceGuard IG20 last year and mounted them on the factory rims. I want to put on some steel rims this year so that I can swap them myself. I phoned Honda and they informed me that Honda doesn't currently make a steel factory rim for the fit in a 16". Does anyone know where I can pick some up (I live in Alberta Canada)? What do I need to look for now that I am getting the rims from someone outside Honda? I don't know a lot about rims and tires, and would appreciate any help.

Thats right they dont make 16" steel rims for the Fit, only 15" which im actually picking up today..... go to Canadian tire, the steel rims are 16 x 6 which is the same size as the factory wheels.... not sure about offset but im sure it will be fine.......

 

Why don't you want to use aluminum wheels in the winter? I've had the stock 15" aluminum wheels now for two seasons...they still look great.

 

In the long run, wintertime road salt causes corrosion between the tire and the alloy wheels. The result is air leaks requiring grinding and sealing at additional cost. Steel rims are also tougher for potholes and rough winter conditions. Steel costs less too.

 

Exactly, gotta love Canadian winters....

 

salt in the west (Alberta) isn't as nearly as bad as out in the east in Ontario....which is why you should never buy a used car from out East! haha

 

Man, how can you live an a place that is so cold and you need spearate wheels and tires!!!??? I'm in Arizona. One wheel, one tire. Swim on Christmas day, BBQ on new years.

 

I just spent last week in Phoenix....a nice city from Oct - April. But Citabria 7 forgot to mention the punishing months of May - Sept when the temp often gets to 107 F or higher.

Also very punishing on a car, but in a diff way than a Canadian winter.

Nice to have choices!

No, I don't have a space suit,...but I do have a pool that is not covered with ice!
(Besides, I lived in Michigan for a few hellish years, and never saw the Sun from October to April. Even from April to October, I only saw it every 3rd day or so.)
I suppose if you like ice skating, though......

 

By the way, I did go to Vancouver once. One of the nicest cities I ever saw.

 

Ah come on. It only gets as cold as -30C a fraction of the time in winter here. Wimps...

 

I lived in Vancouver for 18 years. Very nice, and Canada's warmest city in the winter, with temps similar to those of Seattle and only 4 degrees colder on average than San Francisco. But Vancouver gets gobs of rain during the winter months.

Anyhoo, back on topic: The 16" stamped steel rims might be ok, but what about finding readily-available (and relatively inexpensive) winter tires to fit them? The 15" rims from Honda will work just fine (as they do on the base Fit), and the tires are available just about everywhere for decent prices. And as long as you use the recommended stock tire width dimensions for 15" tires your speedometer accuracy will not be thown out. The narrower tires also work way better in snow and ice than wider "performance" tires (which float over the surface) do. And really, just how much intentional drifting and slalom driving do you intend to do on winter roads any way? Why pay more and get less?

 

That's why I left Michigan. Life's too short for that! Gotta wear so many clothes you walk around like a yard ape. Here, when it gets below 50, I put the Ninja away, and turn the heat on in my car. It does get cold here. We had frost once. I believe it was on a Wednesday in '86.

 

Was in the dealer today and asked the parts guy what a pair of steelies would cost.

I was floored when he gave me a quote of $167 per wheel, but that included tax. Such a deal!

Luckily I don't really have to go out in the snow since I'm retired, but still, I hate getting raped at a dealer.....

 

$167? Geez.. I got new chrome 5 spokers for less than that!
