Unhappy *** OEM Fit Brakes = Joke??? ***

Recently started driving my friend's GE more and noticed that the brake is terrible! I'm not even joking.

My main complaints regarding the brake:

1. The braking power is not linear. Meaning, no matter how hard I mash the brakes, it doesn't brake harder. In emergency situations or situations where you can't anticipate and have to brake harder than normal, the braking response/power is not there!

2. There is a slight slight delay in the brakes. Like if you apply the brakes, it doesn't come until a split second later. This is no biggie, but something I noticed.

Now I feel like I have to brake WELL IN ADVANCE if I don't want any close call situations and to stop a safe distance from the car ahead and to avoid any super hard braking. This is making me worried since winter is coming and stopping ahead of time is even more important!

I don't notice either of these issues (09 base Auto w/4,300 miles). Perhaps your friend should have his car checked.

I don't have any of those problems. The Fit can stop in plenty of time, I've already had to do two panic stops to avoid hitting a-holes cutting in front of me doing 40 miles an hour less than me.

My car has always had good brakes.
Since ditching 28 lbs of wheel weight and over 120 lbs of overall weight it stops especially well.

But it does seem a few folks (looks like auto tranny only)
are having significant brake issues.

Maybe you need to find another friend that would lend you a car that meets your standards or ride the bus.

You're not alone. I've noticed the delay as well. I've also noticed a basic lack of braking power, maybe not as bad as you described in number 1 above, but the brakes aren't that great.
I'm coming from an RX-8 so I know my braking feel is going to be biased BUT, whenever I drive my wife's 08 Fit it's hard to brake smoothly because her brakes are MUCH more responsive. This happens every time I switch to her car, until I get used to it again.
The GE could use a bit of a brake upgrade, nothing drastic though.

Yea...I agree with the people above. I think the brakes are better stock than my TSX and my CL-S. I'm hard on the brakes and I have yet to see any brake fade or lack of stopping power with the fit.

Brake pedal modulation in Fits isn't progressive enough. It can be hard to finesse your braking at times because a millimeter of difference in pedal travel can spell a huge difference in braking force.

If you have a Fit without ABS like mine, you'll definitely notice. It's notoriously easy to induce lockup.

I do not agree that the Fits' brakes are weak however. They work very well; it's actually the tires that make braking crappy. Better tires solved braking and modulation in my case. It's still not the most progressive brake pedal in the world but it became much harder to induce a lockup once I upgraded my rubber.

EDIT: he ^ beat me to it. Upgrading the rubber would result in more improvement than better brakes btw.

I won't say your crazy- only that I'm fine with my Fit brakes. I've needed them in a hurry a few times and they're everything I expect and need. Perhaps they should be looked at if it's that bad, because I don't think the brakes are normally that bad. At least I would hope not! I only have one car to go by- mine.

The brakes are far from horrible, but they could be better. The difference is amazing going from the car in my signature to the Fit...you definitely have to allow for more breaking distance. The M Coupe stops on a dime as they say...

I must have a different Fit. I find the brakes to be really good. Much better than my Caravan which has just had a brake job.

It must be that Toronto driving. My first night with the Fit I was going up 410 and had to do a panic stop. My first encounter with ABS I realized later. Scared the oops I messed my upholstery out of me. Since then I find regular braking to be just fine.

I hope the Fit's brakes would be better than a Caravan's brakes.

I do have a 2007 ATM Sport Fit with accessory 16" wheels. The stock brakes really sucked! The dealer replaced the front rotors twice under warranty! So I'm not imagining things. It might be because of the 16" wheels in conjunction with the automatic... I then installed the Integra Type-R front discs and caliper. I needed big brakes that would fit within 15" wheels for my snow tires. Other aftermarket big brake kits at the time required 17" wheels. Check this post out https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/fit-suspension-brake-modifications/45575-integra-type-r-front-disc-brake-installation.html My brakes are great now. I also installed T1R rear discs. That kit came with ALL replacement SS braided lines for the car. Great brakes now.

I find the Caravan has good brakes. It helps if you don't tailgate too.

my brakes are good, but that might be due to me removing all the seats except for the driver front. much lighter

What is wrong with half of the people that make these comments. The fit is intended to be a sporty economy car. I see people complaining about the acceleration, speed, and braking of the fit. It has an engine designed for gas mileage and it is a very light car which does not need huge brakes to slow it down. I also own a WRX STI which is heavily modded with at least 20k in mods and has easily over 450hp. As much fun as it is to drive my STI I absolutely love driving my fit. I feel that although it isnt fast it has great all around pick up, handles awesome, and brakes equally well. No complaints here.

Agreed.

When I bought my Fit, I seriously had to adapt my braking habits. You bearly touch the brake pedal, and you can feel them.

I actually like the brakes on the Fit, I think they are just perfect with a car of this size and power.

I drive my mom's 07 accord EXL V6 regulary (so regularly, I have a key), and the first time I drove it, I was shocked. The brakes on that were much more sensitive then the Fits. I actually don't like driving the Accord because of the brakes (But I like driving it cuz its just such a nice car).

My dads Explorer on the other hand. OMG!!! My right knee and calf actually hurt when I drive it for a long period in stop and go traffic, but luckily I don't drive it hardly at all. (I had to have knee surgery twice on both knees in high school cuz of a football injury, which is the reason I dont drive a MT anymore ) You really have to stomp on the brake pedal, to get some good braking going.

Also to the OP, Take your friends Fit when its raining, get it up to 60. Make sure no one is behind you, and just SLAM the brakes. Trust me, the Fit has some good brakes. I know because I almost hit a dear this weekend going 60, and I did just this.
