Oil change without ramps?

I have an '09 Fit Sport. Does anyone change their oil without ramps? Using an oil extractor should be easy enough, but I'm not sure about the filter. How do you handle that?

Thx!

I'm more worried about the vehicle falling off the jackstands somehow. Some of us just aren't lucky people. :-)

I use a set of homemade ramps made from 3 layers of 2 x 10s.

If you cannot put a car on jackstands then maybe you should take it to the dealer?

+1 on using a jack stand.
Just put jack stand (or cinder block) behind the jack one in case the jack fails/tips/slides out. Its pretty easy to cover your butt. Ramps imo are more dangerous.

Funny thing is I have to put mine on 2x4's then jack it up because its too low for my jack. Ramps would destroy my front end.

On my GD3 I just reach under the bumper and get to both the filter and the drain plug without jacking or ramps... but mine is a Base without the extra plastic on the bumper and is not lowered.

I changed mine last time in the driveway with no ramp/jack/jackstands or lift of any kind. Any of those things would make it easier for sure, but certainly not necessary. But I do have to agree with the critics on this one, if you're worried about jacking your car up, then maybe the dealer is your best option. I did it out of laziness.

If you want to use an extractor you can just put a pan under the filter and unscrew it from under the hood. I used to change my Acura oil like this and it's a nice clean way to do it. There will be some oil in the filter so make sure you have something there to catch it.

or the other option is to just remove the engine from the car. that might be easier.

For a price! How about a pair of ramps? Nah go ahead and use it.

I was always a bit paranoid about car falling on me too. When I had my last Austin Healey Bugeye I had great stands. I used pieces of 12" x 12" x 24" pressure treated lumber I had kicking around. No way was it going to fall off these. I would jack up one side at a time. Car was high enough I could easily roll around underneath on the creeper.

Thanks for the relevant reply, Chad!

(Take it to the dealer, yeah right.)

That's close to how I did mine. I parked it hald on the grass and half on the driveway, stuck a 4x4 under the wheel opposite of the jack, and went after it. The filter is a HUGE pain to get off the first time, but all it took was alot of cursing and a strap wrench.

After reading everybody here griping about how hard the original filter was to get off, I got nervous and bought the official Honda oil filter wrench. Filter screwed right off.

A couple of $30 jacks are all you need to avoid hassle with ramps.
(ever sent yours sailing into a wall - and impalling in it? or your leg?)

Lol I just said f' it and jammed a screwdriver through the filter and used that to take it off. First filter I couldn't get off by hand. And this one is in a hell of alot better position than the one on the tbird. Now that was a pia. But seriously who uses ramps? How the heck do you rotate tires with ramps?

I cannot find the link now but I bought a fitting that has a two direction safety 1/4 turn valve that you never have to remove to drain oil. YOu just push up then turn 1/4 turn and out comes the oil,,,,,10 minute oil change
