civics hx mileage and fit
I know my 89 Civic Hatchback regularly got in the mid 40 mpg on the highway. Not just by me, but by the people I eventually sold it to. (Bad mistake). It was lower, so had way less wind resistance. Probably lighter, too. Seemed quicker, too. Wish they still made that car.
just curious:
my friend has a 1999 civic HX coupe, 5spd. he tells me he gets like 40mpg easily on his car.
my question is, yes the car has lower hp than the current fits, but it also has a bigger displacement..1.6. how come they can get as great gas mileage compare to our fits? given this technology on the civic was like 10 years ago. shouldn't our fits have more mpg? just curious. Thanks

We have both the Fit and 04 Civic HX here.
Yes the HX easily gets 40 mpg because the vtec is tuned for max mpg yet it will easily outrun my 08 Fit. It weighs less, has 125 hp, and will outcorner my Fit. Yes, its not a hybrid. (my gen 1 Insight does get 50 mpg easily).
base the better mpg on superior programmed fuel/air ratio, less weight, and better gearing.
PS that HX has 140,000 miles and is used daily, never missed a beat.
Its all in how you engineer the Honda.
Its also why I questioned Honda as to why they didn't put the 04 HX engine in the Fit instead of tyhe 1.5. Answer was the 1.5 meets new emissions requirements and the 1.6 didn't. Always wondered about that; I believe its more likely the 1.5 engine block is less costly. And of course lighter. And is the engine of choice for a hybrid if mpg is your main goal.
Our HX alloy wheels are not really lighter. We've had 14, 15, and even 17" wheels on ours with little effect on mpg. Maybe a couple of mpg range over the whole range of wheels and tires. But thats hardly worth considering when you get 39 to 44 mpg. And to hard to find.

You're the exception. Ones around here got 30 mpg.
And most of these posters don't seem to be aware that emissions limits have changed every year. An 04 engine would have a very tough time meeting 2009 emissions.
My 95 Civic got near 40 mpg, and I flogged the hell out of it. As usual, ended up selling it for more than I paid for it. One thing good about Hondas, you rarely loose much money when you sell one.
Forget the emissions garbage. Cars are very clean, and the Gore notion of man-made global warming is equally crap.
