Fit got banged into, $5,200 damage

My 2009 Fit Sport Automatic just turned over 10,000 miles and then got bashed on the back left side by a Toyota 4-runner who ran a red light. He was going probably less that 15 mph when he hit me and no one was hurt. Estimate is $5,200 damage. It's at the body shop now. The other guy's insurance is covering it. It doesn't look like much...here are pictures. I went to the Honda dealer (after changing my sliced tire) for them to check it out and see if I should drive it. The rear wheel is bowed out from the bottom.
$1,500 just for paint and paint supplies, jeesh.

If you have any friends that own an auto shop, now is the time to call in some favors and get them to high ball the living crap out of the estimate. Maybe you can get some mods done with the extra.

When I read between the lines, does it say "insurance fraud"?

I was coming back from lunch one day and had a Ford Explorer run a stop sign. She hit me in almost the same spot. I tried to swerve but she drilled me with the front ride side of her vehicle directly on the center my back left rear wheel. Damage started out around $4,000 until they couldn't get it aligned and I had to have a new rear axle among other things. The body shop told me to drive mine until I felt it was unsafe. I pulled out of the parking lot went about 500 yards down the road and it was pulling so hard to the right I turned around and had them get me a rental.

Thanks god it wasn't my fault.

I got tapped on the freeway a little more than a year ago by a stock height F350. I was going around 20mph, he couldn't have been going over 25mph... and it was $2,500 in damage. Had to get basically a new back hatch and rear quarter pannel-ish area. All that the truck had were some scratches on his stock tow hooks. Pretty sad.

In most states it is a persons legal right to recieve repairs from a shop of their choosing at a quality of workmanship of their choosing. It is also okay to decide to perform the repairs yourself and pocket the labor charges and buy mods with the money . Depends on the state though.

sorry to hear about your Fit... I got hit by a deer about a month and a half ago and the bill was just under 4 grand. The way I have my insuracne set up, if the bill was more than 4 grand they just replace the entire car. I was kind of hoping because I would have went with another color....but my Fit is back to his handsome self now...lol

Why do I have the feeling that both SUV drivers were on the phone (at best; texting at worst)? Getting rear ended or broadsided by some distracted ditz on a cell phone is high on my list of fears. When a light turns yellow, I check my rear view mirror to make sure I'm not endangering my life by stopping (I have seen up to 2 additional vehicles slip through after me on a yellow). When a light turns green, I don't go until I'm reasonably certain cross traffic is going to stop. The worst I have seen (twice) is distracted cell phone drivers sitting stock still at a green light, only to decide to start moving after the light turns red.

It's a scary world out there, and it's hard to be too paranoid.

Why do bad drivers always drive such big cars?

Sorry for your loss. A friend of mine hit a racoon and it was $3200 damage. It was like a 40 lb. sucker. Anyway, the car repair/insurance business is out of control. I was told that most car dealers service departments make more money than their sales departments.

Estimate just went up to $6911

The body shop just called. They found something else wrong with the suspension, increasing their estimate to $6,911. Glad I don't have to pay. They say they'll have it done in two days.

The guy that hit me got blinded by the sun he said. It had just popped up over the horizon. He is about 75.

Here's where I got hit, turning left (San Simeon to Cirby). The brick wall at the left makes it so you can't see what's coming before entering the intersection.

Got lightly tapped on the bumper last week.

Damage was so slight, it was hardly noticeable. Just the outline of a license plate holder.

Quote from the dealer was $620!!!

So I said screw that, went to a friend of the family who does body work, and he got it done for $150.

Dealerships are criminals.

Here is the site of the accident.

I was turning right onto the 4 lane street, which the cars move quite quickly on, and the traffic you're merging into is hard to see. I thought I had an opening, started to go, saw a car coming and stopped.

The older lady behind me wasn't so quick on the brakes though, and tapped my bumper. I'm just lucky I didn't get pushed into traffic.

Also, almost got into a serious accident here.

I was getting off the tollway, and the driver came from under that bridge (where the white car is). It was late at night, and the light had just turned green for me to turn left. For whatever reason I was slow to hit the gas, and it saved me from an accident.

The car simply zoomed right through the intersection....

I don't charge the stale reds anymore.....

Depends on your insurance company. If the other guy hits you and has insurance it's of no interest to his insurance company whether you repair your car or not. If you have a reasonable estimate you should expect them to pay that amount direct to you if you want. BUT: If you make a claim thru your insurance company collision or comprehensive coverage they will most likely want to be certain you have your car repaired and will want to pay the shop direct to be sure the work is done correctly. After all, they don't want to insure a vehicle that has been half-assed patched or worse yet a case where their insured takes the money and does no repairs to the car at all. Their insured could come back a year or so later and claim another accident and possibly collect again for the same thing.

Did the dealer tell you what they are going to replace? I replaced the rear bumper myself after I backup into my garage door post. It was around $500.

I have the quote around here somewhere. Almost all of the money was going towards labor though, so I assume they were going to take the bumper off and "refurbish" it.

AAaaaaaaaaaaaand upon second reading of my post, I'm just gonna eliminate one of those zeros. Heh.

Actually, it can get worse. A woman can be shaving her....ahem....private parts while enroute to a date.

----

Megan Mariah Barnes, 37, who caused a car crash in the Florida Keys while she was shaving her bikini area, said she wanted to be "ready for a visit" to meet her boyfriend in Key West.
