Lightbulb Compare Your Engine to Mine

Posted this up on the DIY repair forum but that place isn't too active. Also, I figure since this thread is for the GE8, we can all learn something from this:

Ever since I got my car, the thing that has been bugging me is the 'tick' of the engine. I know the engine isn't supposed to be dead quiet, but this does sound a little odd to me. I think it's the valve clearance.

I've searched the forums and it doesn't seem to be a very rampant issue. Also, many have stated that a little noise is ok, but this seems a little too loud.

I posted a video to show how loud mine can get. When I zoom in around 0:05, you can start to hear the higher-pitch ticking I'm talking about.

YouTube - Fit Engine Idle

So do your guys' engines sound like this?

Someone on the other forum stated that mine was way louder than his, so I'm gonna get it checked out soon. I'm sure the warranty won't fix this (although it's been like this since I got it), so I guess I'll have to pony up the money or suck it up and try the repair myself.

That's loud ticking. Mine doesn't sound like that at all.

Year/Model/Mileage? Just curious, but how hard are you driving it?

Yea that seemed pretty loud. Louder than mine.
I'd take it to the dealer and check the valve clearance. They should do it for free if your still in the warranty period.

This is EXACTLY what my car started doing yesterday. It's only got 1000 miles on it, I've only had the thing for a week!

It definitely didn't sound like this when I first got it, it started suddenly.

2009 sport w/ around 18k miles on it. I don't drive hard at all. It has sounded like this since I got it. That's why I'm pretty confused, because it should have been calibrated at the factory.

Lay on the Dealer you bought it from. Should run quietly smooth. Do you have any record of dealer contact w/ the issue? That needs to be established.

That sounds about the same as mine. *shrug* I could take it in, but I really think it's just the characteristic of the engine, despite some reports that adjustments lessened the noise. I'm not sure how many of those people have had it return though, as I've read that on here too.

What I see are issues with the exhaust valve adjustment over the intakes. Seems if a tech benchmarks the intakes they say all is good, however the exhausts are on there way out of spec. Makes no sense to me at this point, but what I hear in that clip is way out.

The service schedule suggests a valve adjustment only when they sound out of spec, not at any mileage interval.

My 2010 base does not sound like that. My engine runs smooth. I do have a wheel bearing issue though that is getting looked at tomorrow. Just 'cause it's new doesn't have to mean it's perfect.

Has anyone else checked out this thread in another forum? Sounds like this guy had the same issue, turned out to be a broken valve spring...

Well, my car sounded like this for only a short time. Now the sound has greatly subsided, but I can still hear a clicking sound if I open the hood or put my ear close to the front of the car. I can't hear it inside the car anymore.

I've seen a number of people say they have this issue. So, now I don't know if I should take it to the dealer to have it looked at or not.
