Honestly... there's only so much that can be done with a tiny engine in an economy car. If I want performance, I'll go buy even a V6 Mustang: Under $20K, right-wheel-drive, 300 hp, and that's without mods that increase engine wear. I'm sure I could find a $1000 junker truck to haul anything I need.

(Believe me, this scenario has played out in my head more than once... However, I've promised myself that I'm going to stop my promiscuous car-trading whoring and stick with at least one car long enough to pay it off! Besides, I have a real hardon for a BMW R1200GS right now... that baby needs to come live with me, pronto!)

If someone enjoys tuning cars, then they probably shouldn't be in the market for a fit (is what I am understanding from reading this).

Alternatively, if someone loves the fit and wants the challenge of tuning a car that isn't really a "tuner", they shouldn't bitch about how difficult it is to tune (and even going as far as attacking other folks that don't care about tunning in the first place???).

I essentially agree with the above...

I just wanted to mention, imagine what all the V8 guys were telling the original honda tuners...fortunately, they didn't let that stop them.

I will continue to modify my Fit because:
1) I love hondas
2) I love my Fit
3) I love personalizing my cars
4) I love the challenge
5) I love tinkering with $hit
List goes on and on...and on and on...

Making a fast V8 is easy...get a chip. Done.

Modifying a 4 cylinder is a challenge, and even a fast "four banger" still gets great gas mileage.

Ninja edit:
If there was a supercharger or turbocharger available, we wouldn't even be having this conversation....we'd all be talking about how fast are Fit was and how many Mustang kills we had. Forced induction nullifies the "Fit ain't a fast car" arguement.

it still wouldn't be a 'fast' car

even with a turbo kit you probably wouldn't be making much more than 160ish whp

even with the Fits lightweight, that's not a 'fast' car

ummm... that's because we all know the car wont go that fast anyway with a regular $3K or watever supercharger or turbo kit most folks can afford.

+50hp, you're still waaay behind the rest of the performance car pack.

why not spend less and dress up the car?

"The big change is the addition of a new entry-level model, dubbed simply the Lotus Elise. The base Elise model comes with a 1.6-liter engine developing 134 horsepower and 118 lb-ft of torque. Although about on par with many entry-level compact models, the Elise's lightweight design ensures overall performance is not compromised, with the two-door still able to scoot from zero-to-60 in just 6 seconds. Top speed is capped at 124mph."

I think most would agree this is a very fast car on the race-track or auto-cross track...even with only 134 hp and 118 lb-ft of torque (not much more than our fits). Curb weight 1,984 lbs.

Saying something isn't fast b/c it doesn't have xxx hp, or rear wheel drive, or whatever is myopic and pointless. "Saying 160 whp isn't fast" also doesn't mean anything to me...

I could show you a 220 whp civic that isn't fast...if there is a huge drop in hp b/w 3500 and 4500 rpm, or the torque curve is anemic, or there is considerable lag, or there is diminished area under the curve, etc. etc. etc..

torque > horsepower (my preference)

area under the curve > peak horsepower

track fast =/= straight line fast =/= auto-cross fast

See above post. Fast is subjective. Fun is subjective.

All you've proved is speed is addictive. They will spend > 10,000 dollars on a 12 second car. Some would argue that's still not fast.

I don't think any of those cars will ever see a drag strip.....
