Any experience w/Roof Racks?
Any experience w/Roof Racks?
I would like to get a roof rack/cargo box for my fit. I have seen photos of Thule brand racks/boxes on Fits, but I've been unable to find much info about people's experiences with the products.
Has anybody installed one? What has your experience been line?
Thanks in advance!

I have the thule 400xt & 50" bars.
no pics sorry..
I also have a set of old Thule bars that I got on craigslist. Worked fine for my 40 lb. kayak. In the future I may get a basket or box.
I also researched the Yakima ones and there a couple reports of them moving/lifting on Fits and causing some fairly significant damage to the car and the load. Not many (I found 2 unique reports among how many hundreds or thousands of installations), but I could not find any such reports for Thule.
Someone on FF also has a kit from INNO that they reviewed favorably.
It also seems that permanently attached feet/landing pads are sturdier and potentially support more weight than clamp-on systems.
I just went through deciding on roof rack system/box for a subaru impreza. Check out ORS rack direct for user submitted photos, you might find a fit user. They have video tutorials and have friendly staff. Try the yakima/thule fitment guide forms, one of them even uses a fit in their marketing.
I think the decision comes down to whether you want/feel comfortable with drilling holes in the gutter rails.
Go check out the actual systems at REI, they usually have an assorted stock and they are helpful. They also have good deals from time to time. Ended up getting an Ascent 1500 box from thule, because of it's relative size (lengthwise) towards the vehicle.
The decision on the actual rack system was made easier for the subaru because they make an OEM rack with landing pads that is significantly cheaper than the Yakima/Thule and supports the same weight.

FYI: I wouldn't recommend anyone put that much weight on them. And I won't ever do it again.
Also I've had two kayaks on them w/no problems on a 1000mi road trip once... but that was probably no more than 100lbs
Don't rule out a small enclosed utility trailer and hitch. The cost is competitive if not less and the ease of use is much better in my opinion.
