that potentially equates to a 40 to 50 cent drop per gallon in prices at the pump.
so i'm expecting an unusually sharp drop in the price at the pump soon.

when the price on the open market jumps, it's reflected at the pumps very quickly...... typically within a week (at least where i am).

when the price on the open market drops, it's usually reflected at the pumps 10 to 14 days later.

so they artificially keep the price up to make a quick, brief, large profit.

why should i play along and get ripped off?
at $4 a gallon i'm in no mood to be gouged..

i have never bought 1.3 gallons of gas in my life...... until yesterday.
i'm f-ing pissed at being ripped off, and this is pretty much the only way to fight it.

CRUDE OIL PRICE: Oil | Energy | Petroleum | Oil Price | Crude Oil Charts | Oil Price Forecast
Prices aren't going to react instantly to oil prices, because the market system uses Futures to smooth things out. So they're already stuck with contracts they locked in at the high price, and need to amortize that with the contracts they can buy today at the lower price.
It will take more like a few months (June/July) before the difference in oil trickles it's way to the pump.

There is truth to some gouging when oil goes up and an asymmetric response. Price seems to go up quickly as companies increase prices to protect profit. But they are slow to lower, as they want to be sure that the prices will stay low before they lower the price and/or lock in a future contract. Search the internet and you'll find some recent articles about a few academic studies on this subject.

Otherwise when you're right on the margin, the light would just go crazy alternating between off and on. This is pretty common in design of many systems in general, not just automotive

So maybe the light turns on when you hit 2gallons, but only turns off after you get above 4gallons (made up numbers just for illustration)
A few things. To the OP...I'm afraid at todays prices $5.00 dollars worth of gas simply isn't going to be enough to get your needle to budge.

And I agree with this contention.

I've had the light come on, and just wanted to wait until payday to totally fill up and put $10.00 or so in...and had the needle go to above where I knew the light normally turns ON and NOT had it turn off....

So I don't think it's a static On/Off point or points...

today, with the needle sitting on empty, i put 2.6 gallons in the tank and the needle jumped to about 40% full.

yesterday with the needle sitting on empty, i put 1.3 gallons in the tank and the needle didn't budge.

so back to my original point, why didnt you just put in $15 yesterday? instead, you actually wasted gas and $$ by stopping at the gas station twice

FWIW.....gas station fuel prices follow the daily spot market for gasoline a lot more closely and quickly than the price of crude oil.

for the same reason i stated at least 2 or 3 times on the first page... i anticipated a drop in prices within a day or 2.

this thread isnt meant be a landmark moment in fitfreak history... just a point of curiosity.

the price of gas will fall about 40 cents within the next week.
why should i pay an extra $3.80 per tank when i dont have to?

Agree! I added two gallons too to make the fuel tank needle budge. Actually, i consulted the dealer about it and recommend such thing to me. but if you wish you can try light amount of additional fuel first before you add another one.

I agree. People get so focused on penny pinching. There is a gas station near my house that is always on that gasbuddy website being the cheapest. There is ALWAYS lines at the pumps. You would think there is a gas shortage or something. Sorry Im not going to wait in my car 5-10 minutes to save 10-15 cents a gallon. Talk about desperate to save $

Thread hasn't been commented on in 9 months...

Usually people don't wait for the 10-15 cent savings but when its about 30 or so cents it makes a difference when you have a 40 gallon tank. So for some vehicles it's worth it. For ours, it's not.

Agreed...sitting in a gas line is fine, if you put no value on your time.

Rofl. You are one of the people that we technicians just face palm at. "uhh, when I put 1 gallon in my tank, the needle does not move". Then I ask... Uhh, have you tried to put more than say.... 1 gallon in it? Maybe.. 5... Does it work? Ok go away before I charge you an hour diag for wasting our time.

Ive found that it takes over two gallons to move the needle. I think its programmed so that sloshing wont move it. The Camry took several minutes after a fillup for the needle to move to the top. Honda does it differently. A fillup moves it to the top right away.

i find the needle is more of a suggestion of how far u can go. instead of how much gas is in the tank, i have put 5$ and my needle didnt move either, but if i put a 10 in it will hop up to half, a 20 will move to 2/3rds on the gauge, but yet at near 4$ a gallon my 10 gal. tank takes just about 40$ so is the top of the tank bigger then the bottom?
