I still find changing the oil myself quicker than driving somewhere and waiting for them to do it. I can go back into the house and do something else while the oil's draining.

Waste oil gets poured into an old laundry detergent container and dumped at the gas station.

Plus, I know I'm using the right oil and actually changing the filter, not screwing around.

They might shoot some brake cleaner in there too if they are truly thorough and want to inspect the brakes (especially the rears) without the springs and levers covered with dust.
especially when most (all?) honda service depts perform this inspection anyway for an oil change: they want to find serviceable issues. They even pull the tires to check brake shoes when all you get is an oil change! If you're getting wheels rotated, the extra time is nil for whatever the B1 service check involves.

I can't see that the rest of those B1 inspections will affect my warranty, and I can always make the inspections myself.
It seems to be standard policy to make the customer sweat; my dealer wrote "customer declined B1 service" on my receipt. Made me cry. They wanted $180 here too (coincidence?). The oil change is $35.

edit: No they didn't write that, what they actually wrote on my receipt was: "customer requests A1 service." Memory is a funny thing. Still, it made me cry.

My Fit doesn't get a lot miles put on it, so the maintenance minder (MM) hits around 50% after a year when the book says to do an oil change no matter what percent the MM shows. So I do that time-based oil change myself without resetting the MM. Then when the MM gets down to 5-10% , I'll have the dealer do an oil change and reset the MM. That pattern will change in a couple of years because a second beater car I'm using during winter will probably reach the end of its life then, and the Fit will get more miles. Right now, the beater is costing me very little to operate so it's worth running it till it dies or needs a major repair.

I'm probably a sucker, but I want to be able to show that the dealer did the most critical mechanical item (oil change) when the MM said to in case of any future warranty issues. I also save documentation for the oil changes I do myself. If I "decline" the B1 service, I'll also write in the maintenance book that I did my own inspection and note the date.

Its all the BS extras that suck.
True, but if you are carefull, no spills, and dispose of the oil? Goes in the trash. Gore can take a hike. Cost of full synthetic change? $20.00

Gore? How about kids who get cancer from polluted well water?

Besides, recycling oil means less oil bought from people who hate us... and lowers the cost of gas.

Hey I like those services... Do they come as a combo pack with injector realignment and airflow recalibration to boost my mpg?

If you're serious, that's really sad. Around here, all the auto parts chain stores take used oil with no hassles and no charge. You went to the store to get the oil - is it that big a hassle to go there again sometime to dispose of the old stuff?

Ouch - I really couldn't care less for Gore, and would love to tell the EPA and CARB to take a hike too, but oil in the trash is just plain wrong.

After we took my dad's pt cruiser to Chrysler for service four times in a row for the same thing we too have decided to screw the dealer maintenance and do it ourselves. Took those monkeys four tries to put the air cleaner on right, FOUR!!

I don't get why dealers still try to pull this crap. Don't they get it yet that we can share information so easily these days? They're destroying their business!

Please recycle oil. Don't throw it in the trash. It's a non-renewable resource and wars are being fought over it.

Or you could just pour your oil on the brush pile and use it as an accelerant to get that shit going like we do... It's really not that hard to dispose of. But don't put it in the trash..

Brake cleaning = using brake cleaner on brake parts to remove brake dust. They do adjust the parking brake usually with that.

Perhaps, but it's just as prevalent in good ol'boy Cobb County GA. Every car here has an obligatory "3" sticker along with a fish and a god-bless-america.

So I think that's an resounding "YES! The Dealership is peddling BS."

I wouldn't ask your husband to turn in his man card. He didn't cave. He didn't have the work done.

A disreputable dealership is going to be a disreputable dealership. Getting mad really doesn't change anything. Having the knowledge is the key. I'd report it to Honda. But usually when I'm in a situation where I'm getting feedback that a dealership is lying or doesn't know what they are talking about? I just ignore it, and file it under...I don't want this dealership.

I think you clearly know this is NOT a dealership inwhich you want further involvement.
