Not a silly question--because I've been wondering that as well!

So, inspired, I found this:

Official FIT LINGO

from that page:

"GE8 is the chassis code for 09+ USDM Fits"

(and USDM = US Domestic Market, from same source)

Is that 2009 and newer? Does GE8 include 2011s?

Extremely close there, kudos to you.

GE is indeed the chassis code for the 2009 to current day Fits in places like the US and Canada. Other places like Japan, Great Britain, Brazil, etc. had GEs as a 2008 model year (while we in the states/Canada were still getting the older GD chassis).

The 8 signifies that it has the 1.5 liter i-VTEC engine; if I recall correctly, there is a GE6 which comes with a 1.2 i-VTEC or a 1.3 i-VTEC engine which is not available in North America as well as a GE7 (maybe a GE9 as well) which has a 4WD option much like the Honda CR-V did.

You'll also find the GE8 in your VIN.

^^ Sure, if you're stateside or have a FWD 1.5L GE elsewhere. If it doesn't have the 1.5L engine or has 4WD it won't be though.

You can also tell if the Fit (state side at least) is a manual or automatic by looking at the seventh character in the VIN (7 for M/T, 8 for A/T) and if its a Base or Sport (4 for Base, 6 for Sport) by looking at the eight character.

Oh I know, but since he's in the states, he'll see it.

I assume you are new to the "tuner/car" scene (lol i sound like a tool saying that). But pretty much everybody refers to cars by chassis code. Just for sake of simplicity. Instead of saying '98 civic hatch, you can simply say "EK", and boom everyone knows exactly what car you are talking about and the best part is...

You just saved yourself from typing like 10 whole characters, and freed up space on the internetz
