K&N drop in filter
Its carbon dioxide but that is OK. http://www.motorsport.org.nz/assets/...e-Vehicles.pdf
This is a write up I found researching racing fuel. The BP Ultimate I use burns cleaner and gets better mpg than E10. Ethanol blends might help reduce emissions in racing cars but using more of it for every day use is using more energy than it made not to include the emissions of the farm grower.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is reduced burning ethanol versus non-oxygenated fuels. The extra oxygen in ethanol combines with carbon to form C02 (note the extra atom of oxygen actually raising the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by the car, but lowering potentially lethal carbon monoxide).
There is an argument that using ethanol reduces net CO2 in the atmosphere by reducing the amount fossil fuels burned. The CO2 sequestered in fossil fuels remains in the ground if we burn ethanol. The CO2 created by burning ethanol equals the amount of CO2 sequestered by vegetation growth subsequently used to make ethanol making it an even trade. Remember your grade school science? Plants breathe in CO2 and give off oxygen.

Now you're just babbling. You better give yourself a break.
I'm confused. How did we get on the topic of ethanol? Is someone here a proponent of the crap? It is one of the worst things to happen to our beloved classics. Ranks right up there with the cash for clunkers program that destroyed tons of usable resources.
Our 1995 Civic ran like a champ up until I couldn't find a local source of non-ethanol fuel. It was slowly killing the car. Ethanol is extremely corrosive and destroys fuel tanks, lines, filters, pumps, injectors, etc. Cars that are built to run on ethanol take that into account and use materials like viton that can better handle the corrosive nature of this crappy fuel.
A general rule of thumb for jetting a carb to run on ethanol is to start with DOUBLE the jet sizes. That is how poor of a fuel source ethanol really is. It takes almost double the amount to produce equal energy.
First we had lead in the fuel. That was deemed unsafe. Then we had MTBE. That was deemed unsafe. Now we have ethanol. I'm looking forward to when it goes away.

Bump Bump Bump
C'mon guys... The OP had a simple question... Just watched the Pacman/Marquez III. And you guys seem no different... a continuation of the Premium/Regular saga on a new thread... Just agree to disagree.
Theory, lab tests, data, engineering specs, etc., I'm sure are all impressive to the nth degree. There will always be points and counter points. Reality is, once the car leaves the showroom floor and into the hands of anyone with a driver's license, it's a free-for-all. What's not factored into all these stats is the human element - choice. The info is there to enlighten us and not burden us. With that here's a quote to think about:
"Your time is limited... Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition." - Steve Jobs
Happy motoring all!

Bullet seems to think ethanol is a cure for clogged filters. It's "oxygenated"!
You're looking forward to when ethanol goes away? I take it you're a non-drinker?
He looks for 1 argument and goes off like he was right. They do not include the cost and fuel used to make ethanol or planting/harvesting on their carbon foot print. Ethanol actually has more dangerous emissions but they are not regulated and also dont include the damage done to engine and the repairs and oil used to replace those parts. Its a stimulus program.
I do not think that you do.

Drop in filter
I have aftermarket air filters on my Supra and NSX, and was wondering what the opinion here is regarding the K&N drop in filter (for my new Fit Sport).
Does it do anything at all (better sound, performance, gas mileage), or is it just a decent idea to buy because you can clean and reuse if for a long time without buying a new paper filter from Honda?

Approx 300 million vehicles on the road in the US. New filter is required every two years so 150 million filters trashed every year. That is 411,000 filters every single day of the year going into our landfills so nothing to sneeze about. But wait that is USA only so multiply by three and you have the true number polluting the earth, 1.2 million filters every day.
_
Rationalizing what? Wake up, open your eyes and do some math or go stick your head back in the sand. Short sighted thinkers like you are part of the problem. What can I do? You think you're the only person in the world and your little bit doesn't help. It all adds up my friend. Not only paper trash either, rubber, plastics, glue, etc.

I have a K&N drop in filter on my 2011 sport m/t ,not a big difference, but I do notice a very slight increase in mileage and performance, specially when the VTEC kicks in.The stock filter housing does not help, you kind of wonder where the air is actually coming through and from, when you look at it. JJ

The point here is why waste and pollute when you don't have to? If there are alternatives then use them. It will usually save you money in the process and the earth will be better off because of it. Why did you buy a Fit instead of a Hummer? Use some of that same economical reasoning for the rest of your consumer buying habits. I'm not a crazy green person but why not take the easy alternatives when available.

Once again you are either badly misinformed, a bad comedian or both. Butt wiping products are biodegradable and have minimal impact. Many countires outside of the US don't use toilet paper anyway, shoot a stream of water with a little soap and you're cleaner than when you first sat down. Air filter paper media however is not manufactured with concern for biodegradibility. And what about the plastic, rubber and sometimes metal frames?

However to advocate a permanent oiled air filter through some sense of saving the environment is silly. The amount of packaging (haven't seen one but I can imagine. Isn't there some sort of oil container too?), especially if ordered online, renders your concern about landfills and pollution meaningless. But I salute your intent.

Edit:
hmmmm (not available for sale in Catalina Island).

I'm all for recycling and conservation. I recognize global warming, and believe the evidence man has contributed to it is incontrovertible. I would love for the U.S. to adopt gasoline taxes equivalent to Europe to alter people's behavior with regard to squandering valuable resources. I'm a card-carrying, flag-waving, Fit-driving, liberal weeny.

but im not for the gasoline tax. i hate taxes in general cause im tired of babysitting the poor and getting raped by the rich simultaneously.
instead they should provide recycling benefits for batteries.
WOW guys...remind me never to ask a simple question again.
Has this discussion degraded to where we are seriously discussing people wiping their butts with paper products right now?
I do appreciate the two or three people here who actually replied to my question, before others took it on what seems an irreversible tangent.

Welcome to FF. Bring up anything air or fuel related and when you log back in there will be at least 5 pages.
"but I just asked about an air filter"

Nevertheless, I enjoy reading the discussions.
Really...MikeNSX had made a thread wonder.Just in 4 days hits 1,017 visit with 4 to 5 pages.Sometimes a simple question thread here can have a lot of fun and information at the same time. One thing is sure...FF is a GREAT family and that is the best part...

Stock filter housing
The stock air-box intake is the odd shaped horn to the right (driver's side USDM) of the air-box below the master cylinder, behind the battery. It's fed cold air from the grill through the louvers in the top of the grill frame, along the underside of the hood (black duct). This also serves to cool the battery and electronics.
