In daily driving, the ONLY time 0W-20 and 5W-20 is any different is when cold. If you live up here in Upstate NY, that's longer than in sunny Flordia. I would see a bigger difference than most of the country, because it's below freezing for 4-6 months a year. In Arizona, say, the difference would be puny. The lower pour point of a zero-weight versus 5-weight would help cold starts for anyone, but by the time you're a couple miles down the road, the difference goes away. If you do mostly short trips, it'll help more than it would with distance driving. If it's the same price, give it a shot, and record your results. If it's more $, it's probably a wash or a loss, so don't bother- Mark W.

 

thanks Guys thats a lot of really good info ,I live in a cold area ,so will prob use the 0-20 ,I got 4 free changes , from my Honda dealer ,as part of my purchase deal.

 

The 0W-20 at the dealership may already be full synthetic. Ask your dealership what oil they use for the change. As far as I know, only Kendall makes the 0w-20 semi-synthetic oil. Most dealerships use bulk oil and the oil they use is most always Mobil 1. Mobil only makes a full synthetic 0w-20.

In any event, I provide the oil to the dealership which is the Honda's full synthetic oil that I purchased online from Bernardi parts. This oil is re-branded Kendall oil. The only oil change place I know which has access to this oil is Firestone who has a national contract with Kendall. The local Firestone quoted me $60 for a full synthetic oil change using that.

The Mobil 0W-20 5 quart jug (you only need 4 quarts) at my local Walmart is $27 and I have seen it on sale at times for $22. All other 0W-20 full synthetic oil is expensive.

I am wondering if the Walmart Mobil 1 0w-20 is a different formulation than what I see on Amazon. Amazon's Mobil 1 is priced much higher.

 

No difference.The price difference is due to WallyWorld's huge purchasing quantity.Buying 100,000 gallons instead of 50 means much less wholesale cost and therefore much less retail price.

 

Notice that the Mobil1 and Pennzoil has a small Walmart logo on it. Probably to prevent it from being diverted to other stores.

Amazon also has to pay for shipping, oil is pretty heavy and there probably isn't even margin in it to eat the shipping costs.

0W-20 or 5W-20 isn't going to make much difference at all.

 

Walmart has the best oil prices and I was told by a oil change place its cheaper than what they pay for oil. Walmart had the new Mobil super synthetic for 13 dollars and sold out and they have not replenished it. I guess they did not figure it would sell but it did and I think they priced it wrong too. Supertech oil sells for 19 dollars for synthetic oil. I wish I seen it before they sold out..

 

I really appreciate all the info posted , I will switch to 0-20 on my next oil change .

 

I would just stay with 5w20 and maybe change to a full synthetic.
