MT: light to tell you to shift gears

Does the Fit have the light on the dashboard that tells you when to shift gears in the MT?

No, that's what a tach is for.

Nope. Use the tach and shift at 4k and you should be fine.

I had one on my VW and it would come on as soon as the RPM got over 2500. Very annoying and the bulb was removed quickly.

That is what your ears are for. Do people really look at a tachometer before they shift?

When I switch car I do at first till I learn how the engine sounds and what to expect. I don't look anymore unless I'm really trying to wind it out as far as it will go though.

Understand Jamy. I've only owned Hondas and they have all liked to rev, well the Fit somewhat does. I don't think I have ever once used my tach in any vehicle, well not true, I used it to see where it idled at and where it sat upon startup.

Ah see I've had a BMW, a Jeep, an Infiniti, and this is my first honda so it took getting used to. Now I laugh when I see friends shifting at 5k or so cause it "runs out of power". I've gotten used to the "vtec yo, wind that shit out!" effect.

I had one of those too. hated it. I think it came on at some manifold vacuum indicating the most efficient time to shift (not the highest safe rpm). I rarely followed it.

But it does bring up the OP's question of when to shift. There is no correct RPM at which to shift. It's a function of how fast you want to accelerate and how much you want to save fuel (without lugging the engine). It depends more on your mood than anything else.

The Manual has the recommended shift point speed wise. Not by RPM. I forget what they are though and too tired to go find mine to look it up.

I think the speed correspond to roughly 3000 rpm. The one speed I do remember is from 4th to 5th gear, @44mph. 44mph is close to 3000rpm in 4th.

Does anyone know why the manual says to shift at these speeds? I usually shift at lower speeds, similar to what mike410b says, unless I am going up a hill.
