help determine why there is a fuel smell in my 09...

As the title says, I have developed a gas smell in my car as I drive around obviously stronger when idling....

my ultraguage shows my short term fuel trims are going up my normal range is -2 to 16 now its -2 to 20

not sure where to start looking and kinda worried since its gas...No leak so far and my mpgs are still where they always are (27 mpg)

could it be the fuel mix, pcv valve? i popped the hood and diidnt smell fuel., seems to come through the vents though.

any ideas?

Normally you don't smell it if you dealt it. It's the car you're following that has the problem.

I got a fuel smell when the Gas station attendant overfilled the tank once. Did anyone top it up more than $0.70 or so recently?

Did you make sure the smell isn't stronger by the hand brake?

Right under there is access to the fuel pump.

More info: its def me and I get a whiff usually at lights, when starting up and reversing... Not coming from vents.

If it is the pump is there any other way to confirm?

The pump is immersed in the tank. I'd look for some kinda evaporative control problem. Maybe another hose came off or has a broken connector from your previous issue.

Probably not a good idea to find the leak with a lit match.

I had a Jeep that did that. The problem was with the gasket on top of the tank where the fuel sending unit (the thing that talks to your gas gauge) was fitted into the tank. Full tanks in particular smelled more since some gas would slosh out of the top of the tank. On the Fit there is probably an access panel in the tank for the fuel pump too which could be another source.

if you take off the center console, you should see a circular access panel... that's for the fuel pump (and tank).

you can get a quick peek by just popping the little bit of plastic right under the hand brake lever (it would come out anyway as part of the procedure if you take out the whole console)

Tell me Santiad, are you one of those triple clickers? Filling their Fit so full of fuel it chokes?

The first time the pump stops leaves room for expansion in the fuel system. Adding more gasoline after this point eliminates this and expansion can cause damage to the fuel system.

I will admit to letting it click twice a few times over the past 3 years and 78k....but I haven't done it in months and the smell developed a month ago.

The smell is occasional, and there aren't any leaks so I'll see if it goes away on its own as I perform other maintainece.

You're not a chronic clicker. Don't think "a couple times" counts. You can do anything a couple times and get away with it (except for Russian roulette. ok maybe even Russian roulette).
