Yokohama Avid Ascend low rolling resistance tire

Pondering these for the 2011 base model Fit with the 5 speed auto . Tires are the 175/65-15s' . Can get get these through FORD dealer parts department for $72 each before tax . This is due to a $100 discount from Ford until May 31st . The Ascends at a local dealer were said to be $97 before the $25 discount ( 1/4 of the $100 ) . Here's the deal through FORD for Yokohama and other tire manufacturers , Ford Service Coupons and Rebates | Official Ford Owner Site . Here's some recent reviews from Tirerack for the Avid Ascend , Tire Rack Consumer Review of the Yokohama AVID Ascend (H&V) - Tire Rack Consumer Reviews | Tire Rack and TireRack.com Tire Reviews . One of the reviews is from an owner of a 2009 Honda Fit Sport that was posted April 2nd , 2011 . Gave them a rating of 8 out of 10 .

Did you end up getting them? I ordered a set friday from discount tires. Didn't get the greatest deal but should get them in a few weeks. According to the guy they are on nationwide backorder, though NTB could get a set late this week (I called last week)

No , we just ordered the Bridgestone Ecopia 422 for $56.60 each before tax . Did this through a local GM dealar parts department . GM has a $100 discount that's a prepaid Visa card , go here , http://www.mycertifiedservicerebates.com/pdf/GMN.pdf . The local dealer matched Tire buyer price of $81.60 that includes free shipping / handling on all tires ( ECOPIA EP422 Tires by Bridgestone at TireBuyer.com ) and then get the $25 off each tire ( 1/4 of the $100 discount ) . If there's no free S/H offered that will be added to the price of the tire and then get the $25 discount . It's possible that not all GM parts departments will match the internet price . The installation is by the same GM service center . That will cost close to $65 with tax . Hope to have them on by this weekend . Let us know how the Ascends perform for your FIT . Such as gas mileage , ride , handling and noise . We'll do the same for the 422s on the '11 base model FIT with the 5 speed auto .

I ordered Yokohama Avid Ascend (T) low rolling resistance tires from Tire Rack and had local guys installed them on my 09 Fit last month. The ride is firm, handling is great, and definitely increase about 3-4 MPG. I'm getting 35 with mix driving and about 39 for hwy driving. I don't normally listen for road noise since my Sport model has very good digital stereo and that's what I listen to, not road noise. However, road noise was not noticeable to me.

My OEM Bridgesone tires lasted 50k miles and I got 1500 miles out of my Yokos. I'm extremely happy with these tires except the high price because 175/65-15 are extremely difficult to find. 175/65-15 is a narrow, less road contact and resistance for better MPG, especially made for Honda Fit, and only a few manufacturers carry them.

Tires must be mounted correctly, labeled on tires "Outside" wall because the design is optimal for handling for wet/dry conditions.

Bridgestone Ecopia 422 is cheaper but the tread count is also lower, I believe the Yokos rated at 800 and you get what you pay for. Very happy with my decision. Paid $450 (400+50 shipping) for these tires at Tire Rack, plus $40 mount and balance at local tire shop.

Got 39.64 m.p.g. calculated on a tank with the 422s . 250.7 mis. / 6.324 gals. @ 1 click of nozzle . The display was 40.2 . The calculated mileage might have been closer to the display if not for the sloped surface at the pump . The car was showing 40.3 m.p.g. for 44.2 miles when getting home after the refill . Seems like it's closer to 40 consistently since install of the 422s' .

Yes it was mixed. Probably about 20% city. Many steep hills as well.

I’m bumping this thread up to see whether anyone has further input re. the Yokohama Avid Ascends. I’m especially interested in experiences with snow traction and noise.

As I’m buying for the Fit Sport I’ll need to get the H- or V-Speed Rated version, as the T-Speed Rated version doesn’t come in the 185/55/16 size. So comments on this version would be especially appreciated.

Consumer Reports gives the T-Speed Rated version an ‘excellent’ rating for nosie and a ‘good’ rating for snow traction. I have no idea, however, whether these carry over to the H- or V-Speed Rated versions.

Tire Rack hasn’t tested the H- or V-Speed Rated version in the snow yet. They give the tire poor marks for wet traction and fair marks for dry traction and noise.

Thanks in advance.

I have read that the Ascends handle poorly in the rain.

Well, it doesn't rain hardly in NorCal. I don't expect this Yoko sticks in the rain therefore I slow down when the road is wet. With tread count 800, you do expect Yoko uses harder rubber from the outside/middle of tire and softer rubber at the inside. This way you get best of both worlds.
Update: Tires still looks like new after 16K miles on them but I have to rotate them every time I change oil at 7.5K miles.

I also recently installed 4 185/55-16 Yokohama Avid Ascend low rolling resistance tires on my 09 Fit Sport and I think they are great. Not a sport tire for sure but very comfortable and great MPG.

Very bad rolling resistance

I'm curious what others have experienced with these with respect to fuel economy. I just spent two of the most frustrating months on these before having them swapped out for the Dunlops.

I could not for the life of me get a tank above 34 mpg, even though I was literally straining muscles trying to feather the gas pedal. My average on the Dunlops over three years was 39.3mpg and only one time have I ever had a tank below 36mpg. With these I had four in row below 34mpg! I finally did a test down a hill I frequently FAS and, coming up at least a hundred feet shy of the turn I usually make it to, I returned them.

Anyhow, since these are advertised low rolling resistance/fuel saver tires I thought folks should beware if FE is your primary concern. On the other hand, they had respectable traction in snow/ice for an all-season tire.

I've now been driving on Ascends for about 10 months. I don't keep careful records, but my impression is that I'm getting slightly better mileage with the new tires. Maybe 1-2 mpgs. There are so many variables including, especially, things that most don't notice, such as wind direction, that it's hard to say for certain. But with the Ascends I keep seeing higher figures on the mpg meter than I remember seeing last year. It was stubbornly up around 36-37 this past summer, and I've never seen that before. I certainly have not seen the kind of drop that you're reporting.

Btw, I've never been able to maintain 39 mpg for any length of time, except, perhaps driving on highway with a strong tailwind.

37 is norm for me with 1/3 city and 2/3 highway interstate driving using Craponol 10% laced fuel. Winter drops about 2-3 due to the lower BTU fuel. Summer I can get 39-41 using 100% real gasoline. Best ever was 44+ in the summer using 100 % real gasoline.

So numbers I can give you is 37 average under all conditions. Using higher octane real gasoline dropped mileage but less the 1 mpg over 3 tanks of gasoline. This was to be expected as the fuel burns slower and the Honda standard ECM tables apparently do not adjust advance to make up for the slower burning fuel.

The LRR is only suppose to give you a couple of percent difference so at best it would be 1 mpg. I have all of the fuel consumed in a spread sheet but I'll admit I have not updated it in about 3 or 4 months.

If I remember correctly those tires have an inside and an outside or were directional. You didn't happen to get them mounted incorrectly did you? I got them a year and a half ago and they have been great. Honestly at this point, I do not look or think about them very often. I check the air about 4 times a year and that is it.

I regularly get 38 mpg on long highway trips and 33 mpg in the city with my 2011 Honda Fit Sport Automatic. I am driving on Dunlop SP Sport 700 A/S tires (which came on the vehicle). But I'm the type of guy that drives the speed limit religiously, and I regularly coast to a stop whenever possible / whenever I see a stop sign/light ahead. I even drop to 55/60/65 on the highway in construction. Your Mileage May Vary (tm).

On my trip from Texas to Arkansas I got 38, even going 75 mph in Texas where posted. I will try these Ascends when mine need replacing.

I have a 2013 Prius. Have put 76000 miles on these tires and they still look good.
