Best type of gas
I was wondering what's the best type of gas you use in your Fit.
I thought any premium gas was the same, but there was a huge difference between Shell premium (91 octane) and Petro-Canada premium (94 octane), Shell been way better than the other one. I think it is because shell does not have ethanol in it. Anyway, much lower compression at low speed and better fuel economy with Shell.
Any thought ?

I like pie and 87 octane. I use Shell mainly because it's Dutch and I have fantasies about nice clean Dutch girls. They have clean gas stations too. Indian guy I work with tells me never to buy gas at a station run by someone who looks like him. Citgo and the whole Hugo Chavez thing weirds me out. I used to like BP until they sprung a leak in the gulf. I haven't felt right about exxon since they sprung a leak in Alaska. Chevron didn't run well in my 78 scirocco and I haven't used them since (higher tar or something in Texas crude). But it doesn't matter today since it all comes through the same pipe to Atlanta.
what is "lower compression at low speed"?

I tend to stay away from Texaco too. Not sure why. Maybe a cowboy scared me as a child. And murphy usa just because it's affiliated (owned?) by wal-mart.
Sunoco is pretty cool. They used to have a blend-o-lever you could use to dial in your octane preference. I think that went out with leaded gas.

quik trip has a low class vibe. Something about the size of the convenience store. They invented the marketing campaign "top tier" to counteract their low tier ambiance.
Race trac too. maybe it's their crappy spelling (see quik trip).

Shell 87 90% of the time in my day to day life. Chevron 87 9% of the time and Chevron 91 if i'm feeling sporty or "going driving", which is about 1% haha.
On roadtrips whereever is cheapest as long as it's name brand and at least 87.
I avoid Arco and Valero because they generally make my car idle like crap, but i'll use them on roadtrips if it's convienient.

if this isn't about octane,
The station that seems to be better maintained and gets more volume of sales. Fresh gas, clean tanks/filters/seeminglt new pumps that are accurate and in good repair probably whats important if you are splitting hairs

FWIW, I use almost exclusively Costco gas. It's the closest to my house, typically 20c cheaper, very clean, and the pump speed is fast (i.e. they change the filters regularly). They claim 4 times the EPA mandate of fuel system cleaners.

Kalifornia gas is a highly regulated formula, so it is all E10 87,89,91 AKI. The "Top Tier" ones do have more detergents, so I stay away from Valero or the independents. Chevron or Shell 87 is what goes into my Fit.

You are going to find that in any given area they are all about the same. Example: in the Chicago area only two refineries supply all of the fuel for about a 50 mile radius with one refinery supplying 85% with the other on 15%. So no matter what retail brand you buy it call came from one of two places. The tanker that delivers it to the retailer no longer carries a gasoline brand so it can and sometimes does stop at multiple stations on the same run. Pilot and FlyingJ are an exception and haul their own fuel but it still comes from the same refinery. The EPA also closely controls the blend in most areas.

I've been using Shell lately because I get 10 cent a gal discount with a supermarket card. The station I use is busy so fresh gas, and also has a "seal" on the device where you slide your card in, to show it is not tampered with--for what that is worth. I like to use no-ethanol gas, but in Seattle we are in a gas price bubble right now and yesterday I saw a Shell selling regular for $4.45!
Honda does caution against using gas with MMT and says to use Top Tier, so I do. You also don't want to fill up with an underground tank that is almost empty and full of crud, but no way to know about that I guess. The sediment at bottom of the underground tank could be all stirred up if it was just refilled too, so try to avoid if you see a tanker parked there. That's my theory anyway--why invite trouble.

That is good, but I wouldn't take the chance on cheap gas after having a previous vehicle whose fuel injectors got clogged...supposedly from crud in gas.
