on the fit you should do your oil changes. peice of mind and hardly any work.

on my gd i could change the oil without even going under the car...just lay down and reach under to the drain bolt and filter.

walmart 5 quart jug for $13 and a filter for $4 +15 minutes of your time (including cleanup) is the best value for your money and knowing it was doen correct.

with that said..jsut follow the MM

I've made a habit of keeping a maintenance log on my vehicles for the longest time and have generally stuck to a 5k to 7k-mile window for my oil changes. So trusting this MM gimmick was a big change for me to have confidence in. Resisted it at first (old-school habits are hard to break) but gave it a few cycles and read the posts on this forum to get a feel.

So far so good. I've been averaging 6k to 6.5k/MM @ 15% oil life, which is fine. I'm ok with the MM now. Still have my log book though. Just my take...

 

I am a new 2011 Fit Sport owner since July 2012 and have been reading this post to help me understand the MM, how it works, and whether to trust it. It seems that this is a pretty scientific method to determining when the oil needs to be changed which is nice because it saves you money. On all of my vehicles (past and present) I have changed the oil roughly every 3000-3500 miles.

In comparison to the other posts here I seem to be doing pretty well, especially those from NYC folks. I commute from Manhattan to Queens daily (25 miles roundtrip) with some roads trips here and there to WNY and VA. I have put 3600 miles on the car since purchased. My avg miles per gallon are 30.5 and my oil life still reads 70% after 3600 miles. At this rate, I should get close to 9,000-10,000 miles. That kinda weirds me out.

 

If a longer oil change interval bother you, then I'd recommend getting a used oil analysis. Spectral analysis and flashpoint data are far superior to "this oil looks dark" and "hey, there's a smell".

 

Welcome aboard Fit_Phil. I know exactly what you're going through.Give it a few cycles and see how it goes. Maybe you'll hit >9k, maybe not. All depends on your driving. I've never gone the 3k route even when dealers and oil-change shops recommended doing it. Too soon... Waste of oil and money under normal driving conditions. Just my take.

 

Are you willing to let your mm tick down to 5-0% it wouldn't be shocking to see another ~1000 mi with 15% oil life

 

Trust the electronics if you want. Oil is cheap insurance...a lot cheaper than an engine. When was the last time you saw an engine wear out from changing the oil too often?
