Winter tire/Wheel combo

I saw a thread about painting the steel wheels, and rather than hijack the thread, I thought I'd start a new one.

I a loking for a winter tire/wheel combo, but I am finding that it is much more expensive than I thought it should be. I am looking for some plain Jane steel wheels, and a good winter/snow tire for my 2012 sport.

What size steel wheels are those of you with that combonation using? And where were you looking? I tried Tire rack, and Discount Tire Direct, and prices were over $500. Maybey that is what I will need to spend, but hoping to find something cheeper.

Thanks for looking!

if you're not going up a mountain in snow and if your area has snow trucks that spread salt, i think the Continental DWS might work for you on your stock wheels.

im going to try this in my area (snow belt state) this year. i usually run WS60's.
my 09 will continue to use WS60's i have wrapped on 15's. on my '12, im running 16x7 and 205/50/16 DWS.

Steel wheels will be about $50 each new, tires will vary depending on type. I will recommend the General Altimax Arctic as a good bang for the buck snow tire if you are looking to go on the cheaper side.

For the rims and tire size, I actually bought these originally for a '97 Civic, and tire rack recommended 14" rims with 185/65r14 tires. They are running just fine on my Fit!

I just remembered I still have the order confirmation, after shipping and everything the cost came out to $550, but I had the tires studded (the driveway is steep, prone to ice and goes up to the road, so I figured it would help me claw my way out in the morning :P) at $15 each. So subtract $60 from that. The rims are labled as "14x6 4-100 et45 cb56 st new" and were $40 each the tires were $61 each.

Best of luck!

EDIT: Looks like for a 14" package, you can get Altimax Arctics for $64 each, then steelies for $41 each. Tire rack also has a recommended package that is $4 more with Firestone Winterforce and steel wheels with 14's.

Also, apparently discount tire will price match tire rack in store. So maybe go that rout to skip shipping.

Continental DWS for the first 30K worked well in light snow. (i.e. the area has trucks clearing the main road/highway). After 30K, the "S" mark basically disappears and the tire is good for Dry and Wet.

Thanks guys!! My biggest concern is keeping the stock wheels from away from all the salt. My last car had nice wheels, then after about 3 years the wheels realy looked bad. Gerat info! Thanks again

Craigslist wheels can't be beat. Integra Alloy wheels (15") for $50 plus trade of an old unused Strut tower brace. sears had the General Altimax Arctic wheels for $70-$75 each mounted & Balanced. I came out under $400 for all 4 wheels mounted & balanced on a set of Honda Alloys. (Integra LS Mesh 15" wheels)

i suppose you can plasti-dip them and remove the plasti-dip in the Spring?

i'd just buy another set for winter if you're that happy with the stock wheels.
